Hey, I have an EF 6 cyl that has been sitting for a while, just started driving it again and theres a thumping/knocking noise coming from the front front of the car, can feel a kind of kick under the footrest drivers side.
Anyone have any idea's?

if its really something you can feel I'd say bottom ball joints... Most prone thing for big knocks... But without more info of exactly where you get it then its hard to say... Bottom Joints carry the whole load of the front of the car, hence why you know when they are gone...

Would i be safe to drive it round the block to check where the noise is coming from or is there a way to test it? It only seems to be while driving, mechanically it seems smooth.

only way I've seen the old man do it is to put the car up in the air and use your legs to load the wheel and you can feel it click... not sure how you do it without a hoist... you have to use all your strength to load the wheel up... driving slow will be ok... I wouldn't wanna go to fast... territories had that problem where they were at risk of giving way and dropping that corner of the car on the ground... Big recall on them... The bottom ball joint really carries all the weight... You need special tools to press them in and out too...
That sort of thing might be best taking it to Ford and asking them to check the front of it over and just bear the costs... Dad works for Ford so we had all the right gear to do it... It'd be very hard without the right tools... We broke one pressing it in with the right tools (went C**k-eyed and snapped the outside piece)... If your handy then go for it... If not something like that is best to do with the right tools... Its a fairly critical component... My 2 cents worth... Cheers, Tim

Jack the car up so the fronts wheels are off the ground and then place say a length of pipe under the wheel and simply left the pipe up and down and see if you can hear the knock.
And check the upper bush's on the upper control arm they normally are the first things to go. |

We test them buy jacking under the subframe and using a large pair of multi grips sqeeze the ball joint on top of the nut and underneath on the control arm. if there is excessive movement up and down then replace.
