What is the largest throttle body anyone is running on a pre-BA (EF, EL or AU) BBM?

The one I bought from FASTXR was 67mm. He found that going to a bigger diameter cut through the wall of the throttle body. Not all were affected though. I think it just depends on the casting of each one.

Doe's anyone think this actually makes any noticeable improvement in all honesty?

im running a 69mm throttle, its bore is a tiny touch larger than the hole in the bbm, nothing a quick hit with the dremal didnt fix.

i noticed a bit of an improvement, i doubt youdd notice it if you dont have cam/headwork tbh

I've got one from FASTXR coming, hoping for a nice little increase thru the rev range.
Your cars charged yeh? Can you run a plenum or something maybe?

unless it is drawing vacuum at wot at redline, then a larger throttle body will not make any difference

When does Jim Mock offer an upgraded throttle body on his DEV kits, is it really required????

Can I ask why it wont make a difference? The T/B is smaller than the BBM opening, and smaller than a 3" intake.... wouldnt being able to suck more air in will be beneficial?
That and FASTXR showed an 11rwkw increase...

The motor is only going to draw the max volume of air, at max rpm, at wot.
So if your throttle body can flow this amount of air (ie no vacuum within the manifold) then putting a bigger throttle body on, is not going to make any difference. You can use a vacuum gauge to determine this.

You are right but there is a bit more to it than that. Like an increase in throttle response and the fact that the motor does not have to work as hard for the air it needs. I do think that a bigger t/b alone is pretty useless, you would realy need to be have other descent modifications done to the motor to warrent it. The more you have done the more gains you will see. The standard air intake system shows restricion on the dyno after about 145rwkw, changeing that alone gives a increse in response and the torque ramp down low. The biggest thing to remember is that gains will always be seen with smart modification after the new modifaction is TUNED into the equation!

I have a 69mm t/b from susie carbs in Melbourne and it is a 69mm butterfly. I have seen an AU around that has a twin t/b setup on it. The secondt/b is placed back to back with the stock one, on the guard side of the bbm. Haven't heard how well it works though. another mate had a 80mm supra one on his car but it was running an aftermarket ecu and i think that is the only way around the idol air control sensor.

the twin throttle body idea has nothing to do with the overall volume concept.. the second throttle body is used as kind of a tripple resonance intake, mated to the stock twin resonance manifold. it provides a shorter path of air at higher revs providing better performance. it's about the frequency the air in the system travels at, a larger sytem would actually loose torque in my opinion. the stock ford bbm has been used as a compromise between bottom end and mid/top end power, the extra throttle body provides an even shorter path for the air at even higher revs. i'm considering the extra 180 degree oposed throttle body with a pod straight off it, run off an rpm switch with the activating frequency tuned on a dyno, obviously at a higher rev range or wot.i feel this approach would be much more effective than ruining the stock proven performing system.

hope this made sense.

In my case the motor is getting more air forced into it than what it would draw itself...

measure pressure either side of the tb @ full boost too see if there is a restriction.

I bought the one off ebay aswell. The add said 70mm but when i phoned them they said to me it's a 69mm.
I put it on my engine & i was wowed out. I noticed power gains all over the rev rang. I did at the time have a 1636 cam & a mild port job. This has been mentioned before. When i wrote it is a must upgrade to do (i still think it is) i got hasseled by alot of members.
FAST XR did a power run with the stanard one & his bigger tb. The results speak for them self.
Dyno paper shows power gains all over the rev rang. I replyed that's exactly what i felt with my engine. Just go for it, it's a must upgrade for power & torque.
Now i'm running a 977B wade cam, the same head (ported) & the 69mm tb.
My engine makes 147rwkw & 410nm of torque. VERY HAPPY :D
