Hey all,
I've got an April '98 EL, and apparently Ford used some AU parts in the motor. What would be different from earlier EL's? (head/lifters/cam//crank/internals?)

sounds like hybrid motor, AU style rockers & cam, and the part number on the head will be 96AD or 96DD
IIRC the bottom end is the same as the normal EL But the head is difference, is your rocker cover silver or grey? . Also, whats the part number on your head? |

Yes the power output of the EF / EL / AU is exactly the same. 157KW. Not sure what sort of an AU XB_COUPE is driving, must be a good one....

Actually, opposite! AU spec block with EL head..
From http://www.trueblueford.com: Quote: 'Hybrid' Six Cylinder:
Introduced in January 1998, the 'hybrid' six (as it was known internal to Fords - far different to the now usual connotation associated with the word 'hybrid' referring to a combined electro/internal combustion engine) was introduced to allow the early conversion of many of the Geelong machine lines to AU specifications. Externally the engines were identical to the earlier EL Falcon engine however featured full AU specification blocks as well as the AU's low inertia valve train. Unfortunately this did not extend to the AU's head, head studs or head gasket so these engines are still subject to head gasket failure as a routine part of ownership. This change did however involve changing the normally parallel valve springs to the newer conical AU items requiring new tools when servicing. The valve stem seal was also redesigned in these engines to accommodate the thinner stem of the inlet and exhaust valves. Included in the redesign was a new installation specification for the valve stem seal (depth) so check your work shop manual for the appropriate specs if you come across one of these. The block change necessitated a special 'hybrid' crankshaft to be made, with large main bearings to suite the AU block and EL size big ends to allow the EL spec conrods still to be used. The hybrid crankshaft can be identified by the letters 'VR' cast into it verses 'WR' which signifies a full AU spec crankshaft. There was little doubt that this was the best six cylinder to date - only eclipsed by the AU engine itself. Nice engines

Then why are the cams different in the hybird engines?
Don't mention aftermarket cams to a hybird owner, its a bit of a sore subject

there is ALOT of confusion WRT the Hybrid engine, there's AU bit all over the place.
- rocker gear 1.8:1 same as AU (2:1 is the normal for pre hybrid). - Cam there rumours the hybrid is different to both the AU and normal EL. But I'm not 100%. Will hopefully find out soonish. - The head is different again, with a 96DA or 96DT part number (DA stocky / DT for ticky). This is easy to spot as the valves are on an angle (like an AU), not vertical (like EF/EL). - Block is EL. - crank is custom, not EL or AU. (has a unique part number), has 8 counterweights like an AU, but designed to work with EL rods/pistons. - conrods and pistons are EL. That's the story AFAIK. And yeah cams is a sore point. But Altered say they've got one for me to try. I'll hopefully get my hands on it and a varneir gear this holiday season Now I've seen the hea don mine, and it's defineatly more AU than EL. The block is a mystery.

Data_mine, how sure are you the block is EL? As I was pretty sure the other way..
Cam is different to both AU and EL AFAIK.

I'm not 100% on the block either way.
If the block is AU too, they may as well have given us full AU engines, then only things left would be the rods and pistons.
