Hello all.
My welch are starting to leak coolant down the side of the block. They leak enough to leave a pool around the size of a CD each time you park the car. Are they very difficult to change? cheers coops |

nah easy ... punch one side with a flat blade screwdriver to level them a bit then just grip with a set of multigrips and pull em out. Punch in the new ones with a bit of pipe to knock them in square!!!

I did them for a relative over a year ago on the EA mtr.
You will have to remove the exhaust manifold to do the lot on the side. I fitted 40mm brass one's. The rest is how happy describes it. ghiaman |

I use an old socket to drive them in squire...
Yea just getting to them is harder than the actual job...Suspect bad head gasget if coolant leaking there also?....

Replace them soon though ... My Mum had one go on her 4.1L Cortina ... and it dumped all the coolant out of the engine in about 2 minutes ... the car was in it's own green puddle (Lake more like it)

I'd assume that replacement plugs are available from any good auto spare shop - repco, burson's etc

i got 3 for a mate a while back for an xc fairmont, we thought they'd be around $5 each.
the 3 ended up costing me $3

.cheers coops I replaced all of mine on my EL just over a year ago, make sure you replace them with brass ones, you'll have no more trouble with them after. Whipe a bit of Stag around the hole on the block before inserting them. Do all coolant welsh plugs, if ones leaking the rest will soon follow. You do not need to change the small one as they are into the oil gallery and are not normally a problem. Don't forgt there is 1 or 2 (coolant ones) in the rear of the block that must also be changed. Unfortunatly the Transmission needs removing to do them. When mine leaked A transmission Specialist did mine, also had him change the rear seal and service the tranny, cost me $300. He showed me the 2 welsh plugs he removed both were badly rusted and would have failed soon.

As stated above the gearbox has to come out to get to the ones at the back of the block. I found this out when my car was practically drowning in a puddle of coolant. Cost me around $500 but i had every plug, gasket and seal replaced that i possibly could while it was all apart. The plugs themslves are no more than $3 each for brass ones.

Sounds like it can turn into a bad problem. So far the only one that is leaking is the one closest to the front of the engine. You can see where the coolant has stained the block as it has been leaking. I will definately use the brass plugs to replace them with.
These are available from your local auto parts shop?? or are they a special thing to order from ford? cheers coops |

Walked in asked them for a full set of welsh plugs for my EL, they looked up their book and made a set up. I highly recommend you do them all.

Well the job is all done.
I changed the plugs down the zorst side of the engine. Didn't encounter to many problems, just a number of cuts on my hands from bashing them in to other parts. I'll change the one at the rear of the block when i have lots of spare time, and a better place to work than my slopping drivway. The first plug up near the water pump was the one that was leaking. The hole was very small, but had alot of corrosion begining to appear. thanks for all input and advice. now to fix some more problems cheers coops |
