Is there such a thing as a lifter removal tool? Ive been told that it saves you having to take the head off to replace the lifters. If it exsists, where can I get one?...

well for what car?
a v8 or 6? u can remove th lifters on the 6 with out takign the head off but the rocker gear needs to come out as for the 8's the intake manifold needs to come out and u just use a magnet on a stick

6cyl...the old 250 X-flow. I want to change the lifters without having to take the head off. I know the push rods come out without taking the head off, but the lifters are way down in the block and not easy to get to without the head off. Ive been told there is a tool that takes them out from the top with the head on, but Ive never seen one.

There is such a tool. I know they exisit, but dont have one personally.
A long rod with hooks that latch into the upper rim of the lifter so u can drag it out. I'll hazard a guess and say its an ABW tool, so maybe start with a Bursons or Repco. Otherwise, if the bores arent too gummed up and cruddy, you might want to try one of the part pickup magnets that you can get from Bunnings. The magnet may be strong enough to get the lifter out. |

Get a pen magnet with an extendable rod. Should do the job.

Bewdy, thanks guys! . I reckon that they might be a bit gummed up so Ill try for the proper tool if I can. It will save me a few hours muckin' round taking the head off. Ill give Repco or Coventry's a ring tomorrow and see if they got one. If I can find one, Ill post a part # for anyone else interested. |

I used a coathanger, straightened out, with one end flattened a bit (About 5mm) and bent into a right angle (for about 2mm) so I could snag the edge of the lifter. Worked a treat

I've got an ABW job, you sit it on the lifter and push the button, it pushes 2 small prongs out which grab the lifter, but i will stress that it may not do the job for a 4.1, they are known for mushrooming lifters... This tool is not good for tight lifters!
There is another tool you can get and it has a slide hammer setup, you put it onto the lifter and screw it down to grab it then use the slide hammer to tap it up. I've seen them that bad that the slide hammer didn't even lift them out, not only that it damages lifter bores. Good luck mate, i've done a few of these and they can be a nightmare. If any of you are ever rebuilding a 4.1, pull the lifters up just enough to slide the cam out and push the lifters down through the bottom. |

The motors done about 180 000km, doesnt burn/leak oil, just noisy lifters. A mate just wants to do a quick fix on it without having to pull the motor apart. We might have a fight on our hands though, Ive been reading a bit about the 'mushroom' thing...seems to be common. |

No idea on part number, i bought mine maybe 12 years ago, i was doing a lot of engine rebuilds at the time.
Good luck man, i hope for your sake they come out easy. If it's been well serviced you might be ok... If it's gummed up expect a fight on your hands lol. |

also if the lifter is mushroomed u can bet your last dollar that the cam lobe will be rooted

OK, found a tool from Coventrys. They have several different types in stock, ranging from $20-$147. I got the cheaper $20 one and it worked a treat. NARVIK TOOLS, P/N 994702. The ABW model was about $50.
There was NO WAY IN HELL that a magnet would have got these lil' bastards out, they were so gummed up that it took me over 2 hours with the tool! Even if the head had been off, it would have been a struggle to get them out. Lots and Lots of wriggling and jiggling to get them to free up. Only problem I had was with the first one at the front of the block, once its free it gets stuck under part of the head/push rod guide. Took a bit of "ingenuity" to get it out and the new one in. Recommend one of these tools for anyone working on the 250 X-Flows, definately worth its $20. Anyway I finally got around to doing up some pics: |
