Brilliant!!
Just acquired an EL, (Free, with low km's). Figure I owe it a few grand if I want it her (he/she, I haven't worked it out yet) to look after me properly. Bought an AU head with cam (used) and manifold, complete exhaust inc. headers (new), trip comp, and am just doing the cold air box now (new custom). I'll get the head and manifold flowed and matched, a new cam, and all redundant parts replaced or refurbished (this will be done by others mostly) I'll do all of the in car work and this was a GREAT tutorial. Saved me a few headaches I'm sure. Last edited by Jimmy Clark on Mon Jan 10, 2011 8:03 pm, edited 1 time in total. |

just another thing to note when you are going to replace the rocker gear bolts it is good thing to get all the oil out of the thread hole becuase it can create hydrolic presure and strip the threads

Great sticky, but what about the retainers? The little rubber o rings? I bought the lifters and they don't come with them, nor do they sell them, half of them are perished. Do we need them

The retainers are not necessary for the lifters to function properly - but they make life easier for re installing the rocker gear to the head because without them the lifters can fall out - ie. without retainers you really need to externally retain the lifters somehow - I use a piece of masking tape around each rocker end - and slip the pieces of tape off as each rocker reaches a point where the gap is small enough that the lifters won't come out too far (but before theres pressure that will trap the tape) - ie. some will need to be removed before you even begin pulling it all down with bolts and others will need it all to be fairly well pulled down to close the gaps to that point.
And it's a myth that retainers can't be used with lots of shimming - with the cam I'm running I use 1x 1.9mm factory shim + 1x 3.4mm aftermarket shim in each rocker WITH retainers and it all goes together and works fine... - AND the retainers ARE available - they come as a set and are called "Lifter Repair Kit" or "HLA Repair Kit" - ie. little baggy with 12 plastic retainers. Shiftkits Australia sell them for $32.50 a set but I'm pretty sure if you ask Repco / Auto1 / Coventries about "lifter repair kits" for I6 Falcon they'll know what you're talking about and have stock or be able to get them.

instead of using a punch i just used air pressure to get my lifters and shims out just put a rag over the end of the rocker arm and add air down the little hole on the top of each arm and the rag catches them so you don't lose or scratch anything. IMO much better than using the punch or pliers method and DO NOT use your hand to catch them they come out very fast with 80 to 95+ psi pushing them out. mine were probably fine but seeing as engine is out and i replaced all the gaskets timing chain guide, chain etc i thought i may as well do it

Great write up!
we need more of them! quick qeustion, do you have to take the Valve train out? i just removed the rocker cover and pulled em out and pushed them in a few years ago, the still seem fine. ( i all so let them soak overnight in some clean motor oil to "prime" )
