I thought I would let you all know genuine Ford lifter shims are now $17 ea!!
If you have some spares.. THEY ARE NOW GOLD!! When I was dealt the news I was shocked to say the least. So I went on the hunt at all the local wreckers and there was no luck there either as they were too f**k lazy to remove such insignificant items. LUCKY for me I had two spare rocker assemblies that I had forgotten about so thank f**k for that!!! CHEERS!!

If you are stuck, you can substitute 5mm 316 (or A4) stainless steel washers. They are 10mm outside diameter and about 1.0mm thick - about the same dimensions as a factory shim (11mm x 0.9mm, from memory). The 316 stainless steel is very hard, and the washers have a hole in the middle for the oil to pass through into the lifter I have had them in my EF for three years with no problems.
Best of all - they cost $10-$15 for a pack of 100 from any fastener specialist. That's enough to shim eight engines.

Wow.. Hey if it works....
Wade cams and other grinders need to include these with thier cams (even washers!!) I hope people rememer this info as you will be up for some serious dough otherwise $204!!! more than a cam!!!! cheers

I couldn't get them at all here in New Zealand - not even at the wreckers. Phoned around the engineering shops to get them custom made, and one of them said there's no point, just use a stainless 5mm washer, that's what he would do. If it's good enough for an engineer, it's good enough for me. Worked a treat!

If your cam grind has a higher lift profile, and one washer isn't enough to take up all the slack (ie, still ticking), just add a second washer (along with the factory shim). This will give you 2.0mm instead of 1.0mm. There is plenty of travel within the lifter itself, so it will easily compensate for any excess thickness (which would be less than 1mm or you wouldn't need the extra washer). I have heard of people running three or even four factory shims - which is the same thing.

The second set of shims was sufficient for the cam im running besides, I wouldnt risk it as the deck of the block and head have quite a bit machined off them (plus an MLS head gasket) and the engine is fresh from an expensive (for me) rebuild which has consumed not only alot of money but also alot of time and effort. So for a me to attempt that and run the chance of causing a catastrophic failure would be devistating to say the least. Ive also heard so many stories of snapped rocker arms and valves dancing on pistons its too risky. Id say a second set of factory shims is ideal (for Wade re-grinds anyway) otherwise washers are the go by the sounds of it. Lucky for me I had a spare set which I had forgotten about

The amount of shim will depend on the change in base circle of the cam.
You can just measure the difference and calculate the needed shim, pretty basic given the 2:1 rocker ratio. |

I use 316 stainless steel washers with my reground cam and it works just fine. Picked them up from a local stainless steel fastening place for like 8 cents each lol. I think I may have even got the advice from efxr6wagon back when I put my reground cam in as we both run cam's done by the same company over here (Franklin Cams).
Check with the cam grinder how much is being ground off the cam in order to know how much 'shim' you'll require. Wade regrinds require an extra 1.9mm factory shim to compensate for the amount ground off the base circle of the cam. |

Tickford_6, Do you think this may be worth investigating? Wade states to add only an extra set of shims for thier regrinds. It seems to run fine as is but if there is an advantage, I will go down that road.
