ok, ever since i redid my cam (alted stage 1) we didnt put the retainers back in as recommendations (and they crumbled in my hands)

ive had this ticking on startup, pretty sure its only 1 due to the timing of it at idle. it usually only does it over night, not so much when i first did the cam but started soon after. some mornings it will be bearly audiable some mornings it will sounds really loud like an old EA. Now i havnt driven my car in a few days cause of the brakes and started thsi morning and it was a very loud tick.

now, i belive this is caused by the HLA loosing the oil over night? and it has to pump up again? what is the fix for this? and why does only 1 do it? :?

no retainers shouldnt be making them tick.

did you put larger shims ontop of the lifters? when installing hot cams you need to put thicker shims ontop on the hydraulic lifters. i had the same problem with my Stage 3. i then replaced the 1.9mm shims with 2.4mm shims. (about $60 form repco)

I'd it's the shim's if not then the lifters need replacing. Don't replace 1 lifter go through the lot to save doing it again in 3 months time.

It may not be the lifter it could simply be oil or another simple solution but not knowing how many k's it's done or how hard it's been driven, then given it only has a stage 1 cam fitted then a hydraulic lifter does sound plausable.

if you dont want to rip it apart yet. (P.S not hard at all to change shims) try some of that Lifter cleaner from repco. meant to remove dirt and s**t from the lifters

EF2 fairmont
126,000k's
oil changed 1000k's ago. Penrite HPR 15
its only 1 ticking.
used a 2nd set of factory ford shims. so each arm has 2 total ford shims.

the ticking goes after about 5-10 mins of driving.

Southy has a good point it may only be a sticky lifter with a $20 solution. Try some lifter cleaner or a quality oil flush. Could be what the doctor orders.

because with a regrind you need to ad ~2mm of shim to the lifters(as per alted install guide).

replace a 1.9mm shim with a 2.4mm shim. missing shim = 1.4mm

all regrinds you are required to ad more shims.

can anyone tell me what the tapping is? is it cause there is a slight gap and the tapping is the closing of that gap? if so, how does the lifter s**t from repco solve it?

Hydraulic lifters work on oil pressure hence the name hydraulic, solid lifters only need a film of oil between the cam and lifter or lifter and rocker. If the hydraulic lifter gets a bit of s**t in the centre it looses it's pressure and can tap on the cam until the engine warms. A good clean will probably cure the problem, try the cheepest solution first before spending too much money.

When I did my first cam swap many moons ago one of the lifters died during the process of swapping everything over. It was easy enough to find which one was noisy - if you pull the rocker cover off and push on each rocker arm it should be firm and not compress. On the dodgy one there was a little bit of movement and a slight tap when I pushed on it. You're going to have to pull all the rocker gear off anyway but atleast you can find out which one is buggered and how many to buy.
