Looks good dude, and very reasonable cost! Sounds like something i should have done to my flywheel next time the gearbox is out to do the clutch.

I wish a flywheel would fit on our metal lathe

I should ask him about the idea of machining it down a bit. But once it's done i guess it would need to be balanced again, meaning i would have to send it away & spend up on that part anyway? Yes, if you had access to a lathe big enough it could be done very cheaply, always a good idea to get a rebalance, Mine was rebalanced and then balanced again with the pressure plate bolted up.

Yeh a lot of the cost is in the weight being taken off, just getting the flywheel faced and balanced is normally $50, so taking the weight out yourself you'd save $50 odd... depending on the machinist.

Yeah would definately get a balance if it does fit on (not 100% sure, but have a feeling there's about 50-100mm too little clearance).
Then I would have to make something up to bolt the flywheel to while machining it.

Modify an old crankshaft maybe.
still not that hard of a job to make something up though.

Yeah sure you'll get the surface but not he balancing. These are the costs of the machining I had done, Lighten fly wheel $150, Re face $66 and Balance $55.

Thought I would add to this post instead of starting a new one..
I have just had a stock EF falcon flywheel lightened and balanced it's to go in a dedicated track car so any weight reduction helps, how much of an effect it will have on drive ability/ performance I'm still to find out next weekend. Unsure of initial standard weight ( I assume 11.8 kg as before) but we have taken it down to exactly 8kg without the balancing where you can see on the engine side there has been 3 holes drilled near the ring gear. I'll post back later when see how it goes for anyone else who may be interested in doing this.
