Hello everyone

I've been reading up on some old Jim Mock articles and it appears that an EF cylinder head conversion is pretty decent for a modification. At this stage I'm wondering if its worth it and how much other work needs to be done. I'm looking for guidance on this topic as I've never done anything like this before.

What I want to do:

EF cylinder head conversion
EF intake manifold
Use ED rocker cover on EF cylinder head

So you get the idea on what I want to do. The thing is I don't know if I need to do anything else, like change the ecu, wiring etc.

Can anyone steer me in the right direction?

EF/EL head will bolt up fine, use the EF/EL rockers. Don't use the EL Hybrid rockers with an E series cam.

BBM is OK, you will need the EL ECU and associated parts.

Caution with the ED Rocker cover, I have had the use Sealant to stop mine leaking. 1/2 moon doesn't seal well with the after market rocker gaskets. Also the Rocker Bolt replacement rubbers are s**t.

If you are porting the head, etc, it won;t make a huge difference which head you use but the 94AB is the better of the batch.

Thanks for the reply man. What I have at the moment is a 91AA, pretty much what I want to get from this thread is whether its worth swapping over to a 94AB or not. I would pretty much be just bolting it all up and being done with it as far as it goes. I have heard however that the EA cam is the "biggest" of the E series (and possibly best). Anyone have any insight on this?

stock for stock there will be no noticeable gains from changing the head alone, something to keep in mind is if your going to use ef manifold the ed rocker cover dont have the mounting points for the throttle cable..

the ea cam thing is a myth, a placebo imo..
best to just fit a regrind to your current head and will see more gains..

IIRC.....of the stock heads that AREN'T XR6 heads, the best flowing one was the 91AA head.....this was before the AU came out.

I think the design of the ports were better on ef which made for a better head to port iirc. Tickford_6 done a tech doco on heads and porting with cut up heads showing the different styles. But I dare say he deleted that in a recent dummy spit before he got blocked

If you are staying stock with the head, don't bother, not worth the effort.

As the the EA Cam, i'm with Troyman.

Wow that's silly.

Thanks for the replies guys, I think I might just stick with my 91AA as I don't think I'll be doing head work yet. What can be done to the engine besides extractors then? a cam? if I got some kind of mild cam would I need a new ecu or something?

At this stage I just want to figure out what some "budget" modifications are that can be done to make a little bit more power.

AU injectors....atomise the fuel better than the old single pintle type ones.....headers and exhaust of course....air filter mods.....a cam.....TI J3 chip.
