Hey all im always on this site reading up on cars and getting ideas for things to do with my car.
ive now got a problem with my own car so decided to sign up and see if anyone here has any suggestions or knows the exact cause of the problem. my car (ef fairmont 96) has been losing water/coolant via the overflow, ONLY when the car is off. it seems that its got alot of pressure built up and ends up pushing it out. i replaced the radiator and have replaced the thermostat twice. ive been told it could be the headgasket but the oil hasnt gone milky at all so im not really sure. im really out of ideas and not sure what to do..cos as it is i have to fill it up with approximately 1.5/2L of water per DAY =[ any suggestions are greatly appreciated.. ~Bilko

welcome to the site mate.
Doesnt really sound like a gasket. sounds like the pressure caps seal is buggered, a little bit of heat soak when you switch it off and the thing blows it out. $20 and you should be set

try it to start with and just keep an eye on it. maybe with summer coming up go one less, but thats for your judgement.
Grab yourself a haynes manual. it'll help you heaps too mate.

Yeah, same as what the manual says...so factory pressure. Higher pressure caps can cause other parts of your cooling system to be under higher pressures. Your hoses won't last as long and might crack after constant use. Lower pressure caps won't have too much problem, but you will lose water through the overflow obviously.
Good luck and welcome to the site.

hey guys
i put a new cap on it and it has stopped the leak. it just seems weird that when the car is turned off that there is this pressure being forced back and making the water bubble like it does? any suggestions as to what causes that? thanks

to me it doesnt look that buggerered... it seems a bit rusty/corroded around that spring part but if im to press on that it takes a bit to compress it.
on the overflow bottle it seems that this water/air that causes the bubbling is coming from the 2 hoses from left quarter panel side that lead to the radiator?
