Have you gotten out to see where its coming from?
I'd guess its your lifters not getting oil. |

id say more like a worn big-end bearing.

Well it sounds a bit more serious then - big end bearing like others have suggested.

i would check where the sound is coming from, but it only does it when its really cold. the engine runs perfect, doesnt blow smoke(unless freezing cold, mostly steam). it wasnt driving for about six months, then i got her up and going did full service and tune, its been running beautiful for the past 6months(no weird sounds). until winter came. i know the thermo is dead(will be flushing her out and putting in new thermo later on today).
think ill take her down to my mechanics and let him have a look. |

I reckon the big end bearing was dying in a motor i've just pulled out, and it made the deep knocking when the front of the motor was higher than the rear, which might have meant less oil for the bearing. If this is true maybe it could be used as a test.
It also did it more so when the motor was cold. Colder oil doesn't circulate as well and therefore doesn't lubricate as well, so it could be that your problem was there but didn't surface until the current specific circumstances including the atmospheric temperature were reached. Every problem will have a date upon which it was first noticed.

ok now im 90% sure its the big end bearing, because when the car is parked in the drive way(which is on a hill) the noise is alot worse, and on morings that wernt so cold and the car was started in the drive way the noise was faintly there. thanks for the info relaxed_deplomacy.
ok if it is the bearing then is it worth fixing? and how much would it be? or should i just pull the engine |

how much would a full engine rebuild set me back? roughly

I was quoted around $1300-$1400 for a rebuild if i did all the assembly and bearing sizing myself, take off say $100 because my rocker gear was stuffed. I haven't done this before and figure it would be easy to make a mistake first time around. It's better to do a lawnmower first and work your way up. So for me it was an easy decision to fit another motor.
In my first case of a dud motor i fitted an EL motor with 96k on it for $650 with a 6mths warranty plus miscellaneous costs, i used all the original accessories. This time i'm fitting an AU for $495 with 6mths warranty (maybe got a discount) plus a few hundred more for a full conversion.

Yeh dont worry about a rebuild unless youre looking at making some serious hp.
Get a motor from the wreckers, much cheaper and you'll probably get $50 back when you take your s**t in, if you tell them what youre up to. |
