last night i put a new cam from Surecams into my el xr6 its a 0xy35 profile, started up fine and after a few minutes of the idle jumping it started to settle and seemed fine. went for a drive and after about 20mins the oil pressure dropped very low and the oil light came on. its also making a ticking noise that gets louder as the oil pressure drops.
anyone seen this before or got anyidea what might be causing it? |

First things first, is it a regrind, a new cam, or an old cam with extra added to the lobes. If its just a plain regrind, then itll need shims. If you havent put them in, and need them, then theyll have to go in. Otherwise, a ticking noise could be coming from a shagged lifter. But as to why you have low oil pressure? Not sure. What state where the cam bearings in?

was a brand new cam, the bearings were fine. and all the lefters were perfect before the new cam went in.

Did you remove the timing chain tensioner when you installed the cam?

That may be the problem. You need to take them out and re-set them. They are a special spring loaded ratchet that need to be 're-built' if touched. Chances are the timing chain guide on the tensioner side is causing poor oil delivery.

ah ok then, cos on startup there is oil pressure and as the engine gets hotter it looses pressure

Well, the tensioner will definantly need to be re-set, otherwise you'll be in for all sorts of issues. If it by chance fixes your oil pressure issue, then thats good too

I would also check out your lifter seals, cost about $20 and easy to replace

They wont be responsible for low oil pressure though..
