Hey all,

Unfortunately, I slammed my car into a gutter a little while ago.
The story goes like this:
Left turn, out sideways, let go of the steering wheel (stupid), regained traction and slammed the RHR wheel into a gutter. Drove off fine, realised later the diff hat had a chunk broken off it. Got the diff hat itself replaced and filled with new diff oil after I noticed the diff is whining. Moreso when speed increases.
So it's been whining for the last few weeks, it doesn't seem to want to get better, naturally. Now it's really starting to do my head in.
I have an idea in my head of 3.7 gears (LSD'd) in a different diff chucked into the car.
(I figure it's better to get another diff altogether because I think my axle and brakes on the RHR side are mcfuxored.

Therefore, I was wanting to see people's opinions on if I were to get 3.7:1 gears and a new diff, will the LSD centre from the existing diff be ok? Would the exposed diff hat (which I drove around with for about 20km) cause the whining to come from the centre or the gears?
I ask because I want to be able to keep costs low and not buy the gears and diff, get it chucked in only to hear that the b**ch is still whining.

Any ideas'd be great
Chris

EDIT - WTF am I doing?? Realised I put this in the wrong place, sorry.

Get a second hand diff, replace gears and be done with it,
I'd hate to install gears in a bent housing.

But first throw another axle in your current one.

As Krytox suggested change the axle first as they are pretty easy to bend.

is it auto? and does it only do it in Drive and not in 3rd gear?? cos i have this problem as well and took it to a Diff specialist and they said it wasn't the diff, but more the gear box, they also said it will cause no probs only the annoying sound lol

My Solution: Install two 12" subs and you wont hear a single whistle again lol

Whining could be bearings

i did same thing didnt let go of the steering wheel though in a industrial estate only a little worse smashed the diff hat and wheel got a tow home lucky i was only 10 k from home. got new diff hat through in an axle from another diff i had and was sweet. you'll know if its a bent axle it'll be more of a squeek than a whine, like someones got a mouse ands strangling it, sort of sound.

Thats interesting. Might be worth investigating new axles.
Are they hard to change yourself?

Excatly, a whining diff can have nothing to do with the centre at all. You'll have to pull it apart and diagnose.

lol unfortunatly did exactly what your story explains one wet and slippery night i will say 100% it would be the gears, once they heat up from not having fluid over them. it broke where the watts link is on the diff hat yes? hence replacing the whole diff hat.

Yep, the chunk where the watts linkages attaches to the diff hat gave way.
The diff was exposed for a good 20 km before I noticed the whining. When I stuck my head underneath to have a look, the entire diff was covered in oil and smoke was starting to emerge from within the broken chunk. It stank real bad too.

Sounds like you have run your diff dry when you've broken a bit off the diff hat, this has overheated your gears and cooked them, reason for your noise. And your lsd clutches would be very unhappy. I would do a full rebuild(a***, center, axels ect) or get another diff from the wreckers. I just did a full rebuild on my borgwarner after snapping the passanger side axel, (has had a minispool for the last 4 years!!) I give it credit, lasted so much longr then expected! haha. Just got custom 31 spine billiet units and a spool to suit... see how long she lasts now :) lol...
