i just got a magnetic sump plug for my au engine of ebay.
ive seen them in gear boxes from factory but not engines.
so based on how well they work in a gear boxes i decided to give it a go.

does anyone else have one of these fitted and how well do they work in there engine..

Havn't got one, but was reading this site & it talks about magnets attached to the outside of the oil filter, which I assume would do a similar thing.

The important thing to note, was that magnets made from magnetised iron, loose their magnetism after a certain period of time. So you would want to drain the oil before your sump plug started to give out magnetically, assuming it's magnetised iron of course.
Other types of magnets have longer lives.
Wonder what type it is?

As far as I knew its much mike fitting a magnetic plug in your diff, at oil change time if there are any metal shavings or worse stuck to it you know 2 things, 1. at least they're not floating around the engine and 2. chances are something is knackered.

Read the article posted and yes the theory is good, especially magnets on the oil filter, but the reliability of the magnets puts me off... especially if they manage to build up a nice little pile of metal shavings then one day decide to let it go in one heap

the same way as the magnetic shavings slowly stuck to the magnetic plug... i would of thought a magnet slowly loses its "attraction power" thus not letting "one big heap go"all at once...

Why does it have such a long rod on it?

I've got one, on both my car and motorbike. I just got a Repco one, has a normal magnet at the tip - not a long rod like that!

Speaking of these, I've been keen to see how well those magnets that go on the side of the oil filter work to.

The auto tranny pan's 3 magnets seem to pick up heaps of little bits...

I guess you'll be replacing the oil filter sooner then usual I reckon.

i think its got a long rod coz on au engines the sump bolt is on the side of the engine and not the bottom. it would allow more particles to be caught my the magnet.

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't repeated heat cycling make magnets not be magents 'no more?

Still looks like a good idea. I think I saw the filter element magnets advertised in Street Machine.

Got one in my BF, had it in for about 4000k before doing a oil change. When I changed my oil it showed a fair bit of black sludge around the magnet which I removed with a paper towel. The oil drained into the paper leaving the black muck???.Harder to remove was the little bit of fine metal which resisted me trying to wipe it off lolll

(quote)fordfairmont. How 'well' are they supposed to work? What do they do? Pardon my stupidity...(quote)

the whole purpose of the magnet is to catch metal that is released into the oil from engine wear.and stop the metal from being re-circulated through the oil pump ect..

i change my oil every 5000km which is normally about 3 months.
so the magnet will get cleaned every time.
and if it gets that much metal in 3 months that there may be a risk of it falling off the magnet i dont think the engine will last to long anyway..

i guess i have to wait to next oil change to soo how much metal it catches?

you can also buy oil filters with the magnet inside my mate brought one for his skyline but the filter cost him $35..

They are good in big high performance engines it\d say, it can tell you wear on engine components, and tell you if they are wearing to be expected or over wearing.
And if you are scared of the shaving comming off the magnet etc, think about it guys, the metal is in there anyway whether the magnet lets it go after it has picked it up or not it was still floating around and being pumped around.
