Hi all
I have an 89 xf ute ADR 37 compliant carby engine. I bought an 85 ZL for the front end and was considering using the engine (efi leaded adr27 compliant) into the xf. Would putting on a cat convertor be enough to allow the use of it or were there other changes done to emmissions for ADR37? or is it a no-no altogether as far as Vic roads and rego is concerned? cheers |

i would just fit the efi engine using a catilitic converter and get the engine number changed on the rego,
thats it.. its not like you can run it on leaded anymore... there is nothing specific that says its a leaded engine, |

Differences between leaded and unleaded were basically, valve seats, ignition timing and fuel mapping. Both motors came out with EGR so you have no dramas there. with the X series the only real difference across the board was that EFI unleaded had a knock sensor whilst the EFI leaded didn't. And also the airflow meter was slightly different (had a different coloured lid to denote leaded and unleaded types). The carbies were all identical except for jetting and timing.

As mentioned above, and lastly the fuel filler will have a smaller inlet for unleaded. That should just be a top change for the filler neck, or you can get inserts for the neck that restrict the size, but with leaded fuel totally gone i don't know if you really need it. Speak to an engineer for the full run down.

Leaded lids were black.....unleaded lids were blue. Unleaded carbies had a TPS...for the EST ecu.

so I was now planning to convert from carby to efi as i have a good block and head but the ecu might be a problem with unleaded? Possibly i could run an EA/EB ecu with the appropriate wiring mods?? the car is not currently registered and am concerned about what the rego inspector and or vicroads might make of it all. maybe get it on the road first then do a conversion or engine number swap with vicroads.
