Interesting problem i am having with my freshly converted manual ef.

when i throw the clutch in the revs drop down so low that it occasionally stalls. i have found it tends to be happening more at high speed than at low speed.

i have only done 200km since the computer has been reset, so this may be a factor. it does, however, seem to be getting more frequent. when i finished the conversion on friday arvo it was fine. saturday it did it a few times and today it did it a lot of times. hence my thinking that something more serious might be going on.

i have cleaned the idle speed controller and that has made no difference.

the car is also running an auto ECU.

not sure if this is related or not, but now when the car starts, it gets a big rev into it (around the 1800rpm mark) then levels out to about 1200 until it gets warm. as an auto it used to rev to about 1200 on the startup rev, and then idle at around 750 in neutral and 650 in drive regardless of engine temp.

any ideas will be appreciated.

cheers,
Nic

i think its just the auto ECU. my mates EF does it too, his is manual with an Auto ECU.

I just thought that I should run an ECU test on the car and see if it returns any codes. Unfortunately the doco on here is not there at the moment. If anyone knows the procedure then I will try and run it.

gogetta: ISC may be a candidate. I am going to Cairns later this week, I will borrow a mates ISC and see if that makes a difference.
as for vacuum leaks, i can't hear any, but that doesnt mean there isnt a small one. I will keep an ear out and see if any start appearing.

alfy: i hope not, its annoying as s**t!

Hey nicco. My EL used to do that too. Get the car to operating temp and try unplugging the ISC. If it stalls then you know your ISC is working.

To fix that I upped the idle screw a bit. Used to idle at 650 - 700, now idles at 750. RPMs do drop once in a while, but it kicks itself back up before stall. I think by readjusting the screw, allowed just that little bit more air flow when you push the clutch in to stop it from stalling. Just my theory.

Also, after resetting the ECU. I let the car idle for about 5 - 10 mins not touching the accelerator. After that I let it idle with the air con on for about 5 minutes. Seems to work every time.

phong, i'll give that a try today and see what it does.

silly question, where is the idle screw? lol
and do you need the ISC plugged in to do it?

The idle screw is located on the spring loaded lever thing where the Cruise control cable and acceleration cable connect to. You see a screw on it. Use a flat head screw driver and in a clockwise direction will increase the idle. Turn it slowly. If you want, make a mark on the screw first so that you can reset it back to normal if it doesn't work.

I had my ISC connected when I did that, but you're supposed to unplug it, but my car kept stalling. So if your car keeps stalling, then I'd guess you'd need the ISC connected.

its normal, mine does the same but dosnt stall. think i put the idle up when i did the conversion. but yes sometimes when shes already warmed up she revs to 2200 sometimes at startup, does level out to 750rpm after that though. seems to happen to everyone who keep the auto ecu when converting to manual.

orrighty, i had a bit of a play tonight and now i think i have the problem sorted. I'll do a few more kays over the next few days and make sure its right.

i toppped up the power steering fluid as SgtBourne had suggested. this didnt really make any difference. the reservoir wasnt that low anyway.

i upped the idle speed and it seems to have fixed the issue. i followed the instructions i found in this handy thread http://www.fordmods.com/forums/viewtopi ... adjustment I found that when i got it to just not stall without the ISC (2 turns from where it was with the auto), when i plugged it back it wanted to idle up around the 2600rpm mark. to lower it i just unplugged the ISC and turned it back out a turn. seems to be working fine now.

thanks for the help guys

remove the ecu from the bracket and cut the wire on pin 58, it will solve your problem

VSS feed to the ecu, which causes the fuel cut to activate on the auto ecu upon deceleration
