I'm thinking of getting a full exhaust system (Herrod) upgrade for my BA XT I6 and I'm wondering if it is worth getting the stainless steel for an extra $500. I don't live near the ocean or drive around in pools of salt so is there any other reason why I would go for stainless steel over mild steel?
Is Herrod the way to go for Ford parts or do they all do pretty much the same thing? |

Any recommended brands I should look at in particular? Or are they all fairly similar?

living near the sea or driving around in salty areas isnt anywhere near as corrosive as exhaust gasses (especially combined with the heat)

Well, just to compare, my old Camira had the exhaust done, (when it was still my Grandpas.)
The guarantee given for a mild steel exhaust system was 2 years. The guarantee given for a Stainless system was 10 years!! This was from Midas, and the system was installed in 1987, (I think) so I don't know if times have changed, and Mild exhaust systems are significantly better, but it makes an interesting comparo! |

Since I am planning to keep my xt for some time, I'm leaning towards the stainless steel.
Mild steel exhaust is significantly better? So is there a compromise between performance and the lifetime? |

Stainless steel tubing is thinner (it hardly corrodes so it dosent need to be thick) this makes it marginaly lighter. I also reckon that stainless steel systems have a diffrent note, perhaps caused by thinner tubing??

Yer, i think the Stainless Steel systems sound different, not better or worse to me, but different - is go the mild steel unless u are going to keep the car more than 5 years.

When you say different note, do you mean it is a higher note?
Oh yea, and also to complement the exhaust would you recommend some sort of cai system or would a larger snorkel do the same thing? |

Something usually happens to my s/s system every time I fit one..So now I fit ceramic coated extractors and mild steel...Usually only the back / tailpipe needs replacing anyway...Fords F150/ truck series with ceramic coated extractors have a "1 million mile" warranty on them..I guess backed up by the supplier...
S/steel can crack if hit by speed humps etc more so than mild seel... S/steel is harder and doesn't absorb noises like mild steel, why it sounds different...
