Got a mate who is considering buying an April 98 EL XR6 ute. 150000ks, 5 speed, dark green, April 2007 rego. The guy wants $9500. My mate says it drives good , but he's concerned with what looks like a milky substance in the oil.
What could this be and should he be worried?

Give him 8500 for it then use the rest to get the head done

i think it only runs rough if it leaks into the cylinders, this looks like its leaking into the oil

not necesarily, ir depends on how long since the ehad gasket blew, knew a guy who's xr6 ran 14s with a blown head gasket.
it's definitely the head gasket. |

i dont want to pick on you but its not "definately" the head gasket. 95% of the time it is a head gasket, but on occaision it can be a cracked/corroded head (im looking at ppl who havent dont regular coolant flushes), also a cracked block will do it... please please please dont take that as me arguing with u, but yeh, it can be a couple of other things as well |

Thats why I wouldnt touch it. If its just a head gasket it costs bugger all to fix. If its got corrosion, cracks, snapped bolts, etc then its more trouble and $. And then of course your probably going to want to do a proper job, which means replacing the radiator, hoses, etc, etc..
Chances are that the guy is trying to sell it because he doesnt want to fix it. That should tell you something.

Either way , its not a good sign though is it. Hes not intersted in pulling the engine apart . He's just after a good ute. Might be a good idea to keep looking around.
Cheers for the info guys Appreciate it.

I've only ever seen Milky oil with a cracked block, so personally I wouldn't touch it. It is either head or block, take your pick. Either way it costs a pretty penny. Not what you want when you've just bought a car.

WHY DO YOU THINK HE IS SELLING IT????????????????????
CAUSE SHE IS ROOTED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and not worth the time and money to repair. Also ask this guy you want to get a compression test done, then listen to the guy talk s**t too try to get out of it.... it would be funny to watch....... I would say with milky oil, the head will need replacing and it will not just be the head gasket.
