Gday guys.
I posted a couple of questions on this in my build thread, but i thought i better post it here as well. Here is the link to my build: http://www.fordmods.com/the-garage-f53/the-sam-el-xr6-new-interior-t94837-20.html I spoke of a misfire issue i had that was fixed by replacing some bits and pieces. I have since installed a wade 1673 cam and J3 chip from TI Performance and the issue has come back... Only worse... Ehhhhh... Anyway, if someone has a similar issue or has heard of this sort of thing could you please help a brother out! It's been quite annoying for the past 4 MONTHS!!! The car on a whole, however, is a lot nicer on a whole from cleaning up everything and replacing some engine bits and pieces. Here is the list of what i have replaced in search of the problem: Dizzy cap Dizzy rotor Leads Map sensor All vacuum lines Cleaned tps Cleaned injectors Cleaned fuel rail New fuel filter I have also had a fiddle with base timing. When i checked it before i set it, it was at about 18 degrees advance. After fiddling with it i found: 0 deg - still problem but feels slightly different, lost low down torque 6 deg - still problem but a lot less obvious, misses lightly starting at around 4250rpm 10 deg - still problem, slightly better than 6 deg. 14 deg - still problem, almost as bad as 18 deg -5 deg - very low on torque and almost no power. -10 deg - barely runs. I used a timing gun to set it and test drove it after each change to assess the change. Is there anybody in the PARRAMATTA AREA that may be able to make room in their schedule to assist? Or know of some people who can definatley FIX my problem. Ive been to a couple of people and they just replace parts and tell me its fine. Any and ALL help appreciated! Cheers Sam

timing should be around 6 to 10 deg i would try all of your earths it only takes one to be abit loose and it can stuff up the hole thing also make sure that plugs are all good you might have a hairline crack in one go and see the blokes were you got the chip from it mightbe sending poor readings

See how it goes with no chip ?

Does it only happen when warm? It could be the coil breaking down at temperature which will cost you around $80. The fuel pump is also another good maintenance thing to replace if it has never been done before at around $100.

Cheers Sam yeh, tracking the same sort of issues in my car now for a while. some days its good, some its bad. again, same thing, talk to people & they say theres nothing wrong. its either spark or fuel related for me. Best thing I found was an old school mechanic who checked my dizzy. said 3 computers hooked up gave 3 different readings & was about 30 deg out! better but still not 100% by far. Let me know how you go with this one

Cheers guys.
I have tested it a couple of ways. I have also checked all fuel and spark components (minus pump) I do think that it is timing related as it does vary with timing changes. I have tried it without the j3 chip and i get the same problem just its a bit sluggish. Although i havent tried resetting the base idle and testing it with the chip off. I gues that would help me determine if it was cam timing, ignition timing or needs a retune or a faulty chip. Although it probably isnt a faulty chip as it runs quite well with it on if you nurse it. I think i might try that and maybe a new dizzy as well may be in order as it has been popping out a little black smoke when misfiring so i am led to believe i may need to check the dizzy itself again. I will keep you all posted with my results as it may help people in the future. Cheers Sam

Might pay to check for freeplay left and right with the rotor button which makes irratic timing. Caused by worn aux shaft that drives the dissy gear in the block. Can give wierd problems like you mention and will eventually fail causing incorrect timing as it skips a tooth. Just happened to my el, was a pita!

It has happened to me before. Dropped a tooth off the auxilary shaft at the bottom and ending up needing a tow. Which part was it that i should replace it with? Was it an original ford unit only? Someone mentioned it somewhere about replacing aux shafts because they were replaced when the dizzy was? I dont remember but it would be helpful if i could find out which part i need to get and i'll try this out as it does feel strangely familiar to last time... Cheers for that mate. I totally forgot!!
I will get that replaced and find out whether that helps it out. Cheers Sam

Okay. Have found out what the hell is going on.
Pulled the intake manifold off to check the dizzy and thought i may as well pull the manifold apart to clean it and check it too. When i pulled the manifold apart i found fresh oil in it. I checked the rocker oil valve and it was dodgy. Must have been letting oil in and causing it to misfire and run rich. Still have to put it together but feeling pretty confident. Must remember this for next time!! I replaced the valve with an all metal one to hopefully prevent it from happening again. Cheers for all the posts and help. Will refer to this later also. Sam
