Hi, have a problem with our 1997 EL fairmont,
It misses under load at approx 2500 rpm and up
Have replaced leads, plugs, throttle position sensor,
Fuel filter and injectors. Any other ideas.
When accelorating up hill it is worse.
Have had this prob for a long time now
But we've had enough.
Thinking maybe distributor

How's it go with idling?
How's the shifting?
This sounds a lot like my 97 EL..

Only difference really is mine was missing more on idle than under load. (Although it is still a dog to get up hills and I'm pretty sure that's my transmission about to kick the bucket.)

After a whole heap of research i found a good little tip to get a spray bottle with just water in it (Some people say use diluted water, break cleaner.. all this other stuff) But be careful of the risk of fire from heat on the engine or do it when its cold.

Get the motor running
Wait for it to idle out
Start spraying around the inlet manifold..
Listen for 'sucking' noises
For me i found it pretty quickly because it was on cylinder 1.. Where the gasket sits between inlet manifold and head. But check all cylinders. Basically you just wanna spray anywhere a vacuum leak could be but apparently break booster and inlet manifold is quite common place for it. You'll hear it pretty easily.. especially if you spray the others and don't hear it.

If so its probably inlet manifold gasket.. Let me know how you go and ill direct you to the instructions i followed to fix it. Have a friend.. preferably one with tiny hands.. Its a prick of a job.

You'll have to remove the coil to check it for cracks, as with the cap and rotor to check if they are burnt out.
With the coil, you will need to remove the bracket and clean the coil prior to looking for cracks.

You can't really, it sort of either works or it doesn't. It can do some strange things though........

In my experience, it would work for a bit, and then give up. One of the symptoms I had though was lack of power in the higher revs, it would cough and splutter and then cut out and refuse to start.
