maybe with the throttle open to much the air fuel goes wacko computer adjust it,and then you get that gurgle and crackle, just a thought, also keeping your engine cool and having a good cold air intake helps with those kinda noises (or back fires)

mine is an ghia auto, cheap extractors, cat 2 1/2 zorst, large redback muff and rear bar hot dog.
idleing down in third sounds nice with the windows down .. with the hot dog section off and dumped at the diff it would get smooth grumbles with a pff pff pff but the drone and letter from the epa will make you change it back. lumpy cam with extractors or standard with large cat back or twin system should give you the grumpyness you desire |

ive temporarly fitted a std ecu instead of the xr6 one using the 300kpa fuel reg, and mine has started the popping on decelleration..also is running fairly rich at idle.
i think its the over fueling part that causes the popping aswell as the straight through muffler with no resinator.. |

TROYMAN wrote: i think its the over fueling part that causes the popping This is the most common cause. As for the burble, you can still get that with a cat; it may sound better without a cat (although never tried due to ridiculous fines and sound not being the main priority). Any cam with decent duration will give give you close to the sound you're after.

easy way of doing this is just a redback catback and remove all mufflers.. that with standard headers and cat will guarantee burbling and huge amounts of gargling.. trust me lol
its also realllllllllllllllllllly loud, expect alot of stares if u let off throttle at high rpm lol, spits pops and gargles all the way back down lol

its not really a nice sound at all though.....
theres a VT commodore where i live that has massive amounts of popping & f@rt as it slows down and imo opinion sounds like the motor is sick a few clapped out old XD's ive seen emit the same noise, its not something i would aim for |

The best way to do this would be to get a v8.
pretty darn simple.

Mine burbles when on LPG, but doesn't do it on petrol. I don't think changing the exhaust is going to do all that much.
I have Pacies, high flow cat, and 2.5" redback with rear res. BenJ

It's 100% caused by unburnt fuel combusting in the exhaust/extractors.
It probably happens when people do extractors exhaust because of the moved HEGO reading leaner AFRs and the ECU richening it up.

I really don't think there is a straight forward answer here.
My Sedan had a nicer overun note with the stock manifold. It went away when I fitted the extractors. Soo many variables. Hell, even changing the octane rating of the fuel you use could change it all. BenJ

A lean mixture on decel will cause it, as will too little timing on decel. Been there and proved it while road tuning a 4L

the car is manual, running a tickford ecu with j3 chip..and when downshifting to a stop it just purrrs down to idle with no burble or pops at all..so i guess it must be the fuel mixtures..
its a full aftermarket exhaust..I heard a green eb with exhaust do it yesterday and it sounded pretty good, should of asked what system he had (actually i think his a member on here (green eb, white bars?) |

KWIKXR wrote: I dunno about everyone else, but i reckon without the cat converter in the system the exhaust seems to 'pop' on heavy deceleration or when returning to idle after you rev it in neutral. My EF has no cat as theres no law to say you need one in NZ well not for older cars anyway. My one seems to pop now and then when returning to idle if i rev it a bit. Being auto though it doesnt do it on deceleration except for when i have to use the gears to slow down Only downside is that its illegal in Aussy to have no cat. Dunno if this would work to the same effect but you could try taking out the rear muffler and just run the centre one? This is tru my exhaust has come loose at the flange from cat to pipe and its pretty much straight throw extractors and out of cat and I have servere poping. And yes no cat will make the gargle and poping v8 supercars would have no cat probably no box either I wouldn't no which would make that backfire pop and go crazy.
