Hi guys,
I'm about ready to put my engine back together, after the head gasket blew. I just bought a ford metal head gasket for an EL 6 cylinder. I noticed there are no water channels on the intake side (in the gasket) and on the exhaust side only very small holes. Should I drill new/bigger holes, or is this supposed to be like that? I would like to get the engine running tonight if possible, so an help would be appreciated. Cheers |

place the old headgasket on top of the metal one and if the holes are in the old one go for it.

The old one had holes on the intake side but where completely bloked, the ones on the exhaust side where a lot larger.
So I might drill some holes in the gasket, unless someone can tell me other wise soon. |

so the holes in the old are they full of s**t or not drilled out ??

Theres probably a reason why the holes are like that but in any event, just wait, or if you need to know desperately, msg Stockstandard. He's a wizz when it comes to all this.

I didn't think there was water holes on the inlet side, Only Oil galleries.
Big no vote from me! however it wouldn't be a first time theres been a QC fault.

Ok I will hold on for a sec.
I remember someone said the intake side isnt used, however I'm more worried about the exhaust side only having small holes. The channels down behind cylinder 6 are still there and full size, however no cylinder one channels. More comments? |

keep in mind that too much flow can be bad too, ie: it is pumped around too quickly to transfer the heat away effectively. A restriction can be good.

most likey a genuine reason, when I did my head with the AU shim, I didn't even bother to compare.
I know 253/308's had water galleries blocked off. and theres never been a problem.

Ford told me you had to drill the gasket for the water channels of AU gaskets when fitting to e-series. The Au gasket I bought already had all the holes so I had NFI what they were talking about. If yours doesnt It would seem like there are at least 2 types of AU gaskets.
So if you want to take the advice of my local ford - Yes drill the gasket.

That is true, but too little restriction cant be to good either. But yer I do see your point smiley.
Ahh hell, I'm gonna set everything up and if nobody can give me a conclusive answer by the time I finish, its going in the way it is. Well, maybe

Ahhh, well there you go.
Thanks stockstandard, would be nice if someone could confirm that they did or didn't drill the holes using a gasket like mine. |

I definitely would. The only way it could hurt is if you butchered it and made a fold/crease in the gasket.
If you dont mind could you take a picture and post it here. I would like to know if there really are 2 versions of the AU gasket. Ill go double check the one I have in the shed as well.
