I just read about the XR6 some of the journos plan to modify in their '10k' challenge. They spent $6500 on the car and have to turn it into a street/track weapon with the difference.

Does anyone know what they are gonna do with the last $3500?

What would you do? (Track car NOT drag car)

Well if they didnt spend so much on the car id get a Raptor blower kit, and a set of good extractors. Forget about the cat and exhuast, just dump it at the extractors

if its anything like autospeed they wont go very well. all depends on if they do the work themselves and are smart about selecting parts, hunting for good used stuff etc, have mates that can weld for beer etc.

-i would assume complete strip of interior.
-extractors(used 4499's are like 270 used),de-cat,3" pipe (v8 pipe, cut and put a 3" peice to extractors) (500ish)
-large track suited cam (170ish)
-cold air (home made flexi pipe) (50ish)
-reinforcement bracing (like between rear shock towers and b-pillar etc) (how much does pipe cost?)
-swaybars (500ish)
-springs/shocks (400ish)
-ripshift (300odd)
-brakes(150ish a corner)
-tires (will kill budget but give best time improvement)
-might just might be able to swing in a J3 chip
thats 2700 by my count, but idd say youdd be crazy lucky to get all that for that.

youdd probably be out of cash, or way in the red if paying for labour, to be honest they got off to a bad start with the 6500 XR6, would have been MUCH better off going a 1500 GLI and doing the work from there, they could have gone a cheap turbo setup and alot of other stuff with the saved cash.

koni reds ~1000
king h/d lows with a coil off ~300
whiteline hd bars non adjustable ~400
dba slotted front rotors ~200
bendix ultimate brake pads front ~150
shim type camber/castor kit ~200 (more castor! ~2deg of neg camber)
second hand set of 225/50 R16 semis, bridgestone Re55? - ~800?

total $3050, leaves $450 for labour and misc other s**t (coolant system flush, new brake fluid, new diff and trans fluid, fresh oil and filter), which I don't think is doable, but you might get a second hand set of semis cheaper from somewhere? I've also probably overestimated shocks and springs a little bit.
Depends on how much can be DIYed.

suspension brakes and swaybars etc... would be the way to go, then just cut out as much non essential weight as possible!

The requirements of the challenge include a 30 lap circuit race (oran pk?). Out of a 3k budget i'd suspect braking might take up a fair chunk.

What set up would suit for the price??

Dunno what they would do, but DBA or RDA slotted rotors with EBC pads or Bendix Ultimates should be sufficient, seeing as they dont have that much to spend they cant really do a lot. Suspension and brakes would have to be the main areas to work on, making sure it can handle and stop well like a track car should.

f**k 30 laps?!?!
I was thinking like a sprint
EF XR6 is gonna get raped then.

New mods...
Racebrakes/Cebco brake upgrade (saloon car spec, hub, slip on 330mm mustang rotor, C4 caliper) - $2500
s/h 225/50 R16 semis ~800
cut stock springs to get a little bit more rate out of them

I would get decent brakes
30mm front sway bar
pacemaker comps with no exhaust
take the front left head light out and stick a pod there

i agree with rushed

should of started with a GLI falcon for under 3k then work it and they will have enough money to cover alot of mods.

to try and save money on brakes maybe get DBA 4000 or 5000 rotors and a race pad with braided lines. That should just tip over 1k mark and still save $1500.00 if u were to go RBS 330mm brake setup.

at least the xr will have the better head, suspension and the diff gears as well... putting a turbo on a gli will net a good gain in HP but will still drive like a family barge.

brakes are first definatly. 30 laps will require good stoppers... budget maybe 1k for good units with braided lines
some strut braces are a cheap option. no idea there.. 300-500? sound right?
some thicker sway bars. again no idea... 500ish?
super low dobinson springs (cheap price for a decent gain in handling- not top of the line but better than stock) these are around 300

still a just over a grand there if my guesses are near the money

second hand set of pacemakers plus remove 2 of the 3 mufflers and fit low CPI cat 800ish fitted

spend the remaining two hundered or so on cooling system flush and repair if nesesary, make sure it can tackle the job of 30 laps of high end rpm.

should make decent decent enough times for the money.

better bet would be an eb/ed xr6, with less weight lower purchase price and very close to same power.

Any brake upgrade with the stock 300mm rotors and single piston sliding calipers is not gonna allow you to use ANY of the other mods for the whole 30 laps.
Seriously, all your handling and power mods aren't gonna be worth s**t, because you'll be limping it around courtesy of the brakes being f**k, IF it doesn't crack a rotor or seize a wheel bearing

can the au twin piston calipers fit the e series?

what track is this run on? is it auto or manual? manual would save so much brake fade.

cant see the speed getting much past 100 mph either way if its a small curcuit with a small straight like winton (2km long in club config- the most likely config they would use for such a test) that has decent corner speeds and braking zones. if its a track thats tough on brakes then no 300mm kit will last more than maybe 10 laps at best... but i wouldnt say a track like winton is tough on brakes. maybe 3 hard stops in a whole lap in club spec.

just trying to balance overall performance with cost. time lost giving 20/30 meters under brakes between 300/330mm needs to be made up in exit speed... and stiffer suspension will give better apex and exit speed. if i had 10g i would do it that way purely as a compromise basis...
maybe take out the suspension mods (as the xr stuff is at least mildly sporty) and get the full brake upgrade... I dunno...

would be interesting to put the two methods beside each other...

if you have a spare 20k steady we could have some fun :P
