I have seen it done but IMO there is not really any point to it. A big volume of air between the throttle body and the filter is actually a good thing.

how big is the throttle body on an AU and how big can you go? are the ones on the BA XR6's any larger?

The B series throttle bodies are all "fly by wire" (electronic). No good for pre B series.

What you expect him to cast a fresh manifold.

As the B series manifolds aren't compatible I'd say the FG ones aren't, unless they went back (backwards?) to E and A series style ports.

I was only wondering the other day why they didn't go that way in the first place. Is the idea of having more air about having a ballast effect, momentum, to use another word, i.e, large volume and long length tubing reduces friction while creating a steady air velocity?

It's been proven a few times, that a larger intake system can provide tangible benefits.
Most obvious of late has been the BluePower airbox for B series XR8's and GT's. It corners off the front left corner of the engine bay as the air box, with a large pod filter installed in place of the panel filter. Owners are reporting huge gains (20+RWKW). I've recently upgraded to one, but haven't had it dyno'd again. On my EL replacing the plastic pipe from airbox to TB with a 3" mandrel bend pipe was a significant inprovement across the rev range, however on a less modified car, the improvement wasn't worth the outlay for the pipe.
