Is there much crap built up round the crank sensor? (is it on front of the timing case like EF and AU? ).
The one time my EF developed a tendency to crank a lot before firing, I noted there was buildup of crud round the crank sensor so flushed it all clean with contact cleaner and she went back to firing up instantly. I also had idle miss a while ago - but it was more like intermittant complete momentary cuts with otherwise smooth running inbetween than just bit of bobble and rev fluctuation - it ended up being injector/s - ie. replacement injectors fixed it.

Thanks mate,
I'm not sure about the buildup... Hopefully that's something the guy checks on Friday. If all this gets done and its still acting up, injectors are next on the list as well as a compression test lol >_< It only takes a lot of cranking when it is hot, (and even then not always). Which makes sense because the miss is more noticeable when hot (and the engine seems to have more power when its cold). I can only think the vacuum leak might be smaller when its cold but gets bigger as it gets hot and everything expands slightly... idk lol Cheers for something else to chuck on the list |

Do the coils the same thing happened to my ba ended up doing the bottom end cos it was so bad
Than got a new motor still ran s**t than did plugs and coils and runs like a dream

I had the car in at Ford, and they detected a slight misfire in Cyl 1, they also updated the ECU which seemed to make a bit of a different in the way it drove, but not in the way it idled.
I had it in at CMI (work) the other day, and they looked at the intake manifold for me, they said it was loose, so they tightened it. I ducked into the workshop a few times to see how he was faring, it looks like a tough job, the ECU and the entire intake system came out. It was in pieces for about 7 hours. Anyway, it seems to have made it a bit better off the line, and it no longer seems to have any trouble starting (hot or cold) whereas before it was hard to start hot sometimes. Next thing I am thinking is the injector on Cyl 1 might be failing. Not really sure, but the Ford mechanic at work says he has more ideas, but at the moment I am out of money for this lol. I'd like it fixed before I decide to go for an exhaust, because I'm not sure how it will sound with a misfire... Any ideas from the geniuses? |

Hi!
It's been a while since I have commented my findings. After a fair effort from the mechanics at work, they got the intake manifold gasket replaced. This fixed the starting issues completely, it's been almost a month now and have had no difficulty starting. HOWEVER, the main issue (the rough idle) is still there! After Ford having a look at diagnosing the misfire on Cyl 1, what could be causing a misfire on that specific cylinder? I figure it can't be a number of things like the fuel pump and such as that should affect all cylinders more or less equally. I figure it could be the injector on that cylinder (how hard is it to replace?) or a blockage or something on the exhaust outlet for that cylinder specifically (unlikely?). Let me know what you guys think! I'd like to get it sorted ! Thanks! |

Well, I've just a few hours ago fixed an issue in my EF where it was idling raggedly and stumbling off idle when cold - as well as having a "rumble" or miss when accelerating - usually at low revs - which you could sort of hear rather than feel.
I replaced the injectors (tho in all likelihood it was only one of them that was faulty) - idle smooth - engine smooth - at all revs and loads - problem fixed - thank god - because i was almost convinced it was a burned valve or something like that!!. Second time I've had idle and acceleration issues that came down to injector/s. I'd strongly suggest you try replacing that No. 1 injector.

Hey good to hear mate, I might give that a crack.
Did you get a mechanic to do it or did you do it yourself? |

I did mine myself - but this is an EF - I don't know if it's likely to be quite as easy on a BA?.
With the EF it's just a matter of taking out the fuel rail mounting bolts (unscrewing the Vacuum "tree" out of the manifold is necessary to get the rear most bolt) and pulling all the injectors out of the manifold as one set with the rail - ie. it'll all move about an inch away from the head and the pintle ends will pull out of the manifold holes. There's then room to remove each one by disconnecting the electrical plug and rail cup clip (some fuel spills out). Just the No. 1 injector would be really easy - it's probably the most accessible of the lot. Tricky part is not losing the little stainless electrical connector clips - and likewise not dropping and losing the rail end clips (again, I have no idea if the BA is anything like the EF tho? ). In the scheme of things it really should be a very simple job for a mechanic and not cost a whole lot to have done.

Awesome, something I might get the guys at work to do.
I can't think of a lot else it could be besides actual piston damage or something like that, which I find unlikely tbh Thanks for that mate, you're a champ. |

No guarantees - but if a misfire has been narrowed to that cylinder and the coil and lead have been done then barring mechanical damage, the injector is next - and as I say, I've had a dodgy injector give very much those sort of symptoms. I was pricing replacement cylinder head because I was actually leaning toward a burned valve (was even sucking rag back into the exhaust - but I do have a big cam) when I decided to do a compression check first and when that was all good I decided to throw a set of injectors at it - is running sweet and smooth since. Good luck!

Another thing I will get them to do is a compression check actually.
It'd be good to know the results either way, good/bad. Cheers mate! |

$65 is pretty reasonable for a basic check. Thats probably half an hours labour. Not much happens in less than half an hour these days...

lol, I get $44 an hour labour at work
It's a pretty sweet deal. Unfortunately we don't have any Ford dealerships which is why I had to go to the local one. The Toyota mechanics can do most things anyway, some of them own Fords themselves! (The smart ones) XD |
