Hi guys.
I've just bought myself a new ride - a 2003 BA XR6 Falcon. I have noticed it has a rough idle, I think it's been there since I bought it. Anyway, it only seems to be a really slight misfire but it causes a slight shudder on idle. It's never stalled or anything, and only seems to drop 20rpm and then surge back to normal for a couple of seconds and then does the same thing again. I have done a full TB clean, an oil change with Castrol Edge... 5w which I think is a bit thin, maybe when it needs a top up I will thicken it a bit. Also has new Bosch fusion spark plugs and new coils. None of this seems to have made a difference. I also got my guys at CMI to do a EFI flush for me. Next thing I expect it might be would be a vacuum leak somewhere. Would this line up with the symptoms? I am going back to CMI to talk to some people and see what else they might be able to help with short of bringing it to a Ford dealer and being poor forever as a result. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what else it might be? It doesn't seem to misfire under load at all, I assume it would be obvious if it did. Thanks all! |

It could be, it doesn't seem to have any kind of pattern, it just randomly misfires when it's idling.
I might look up how to change the filter and give that a crack. Do you think doing an ecu reset is worth the effort? |

While your changing the filter it couldn't hurt it isn't hard to change at all it is on the inside of the left hand chassis rail, do you ever let your car get real low on fuel? Allowing the pump to suck up the crud on the bottom?

Allowing the pump to suck up the crud on the bottom? Hey yeah, this is sounding good, I am going to give it a shot! Thanks for letting me know where it is Corey. When I bought the car (2 weeks ago) it had so little fuel I had to get some on the way home so I would actually make it. So if that's any indication, i'd say the previous owner most likely ran it dry more than once. I'm pretty excited now, I really really hope it's that simple. |

I would check to see if the ECU has had its update.
There was an issue with the cam timing where the solenoids got gummed up over time & didn't phase correctly. Ford released a flash update during service that purged the solenoids & cleaned everything at start. this could be part of it?? maybe?? other than that, go for the basics... Inlet gasket. Have fun replacing that one

Probably won't cost too much As for the inlet gasket, I'm going to use some propane or something to check for leaks today... Might get it replaced anyway, I can get the ford guy at work to do that one Thanks mate! |

Ask ford for a quote, if they're too pricey (more than say $50 or so) forget about it.
But yeah, definitely the gasket. Check it good

Hi guys!
I had a bit of a go with some propane and some carby cleaner. I think I found something!!!! I sprayed around the gasket with some carby cleaner and I get it in this one spot, and a second or so later the idles dropped off for a second and came back again. I couldn't replicate it, but I think as the cleaner ran down over the gasket it might've hit a hole in the gasket or something? Does this sound right? Not to mention when I was finished it took a lot longer to start the engine than it would normally. I think I have found the cause. I will get the guy at work to have a good look for me I reckon. I also called Stillwell Ford here in SA, and they quoted 65 bucks for the ECU update and code check. I know this is fkn steep, but I will probably get it done anyway. Just so I can cross it off the list Let me know what you guys think of my findings! |

Filter done with no change, and the car got it's ecu update and code check today as well.
They also did a power balance and said there is a slight misfire on cyl 1. Seems to be having more episodes of being really hard to start... Like its getting worse, the acceleration at low revs seems to be getting worse too. I still think its a vacuum leak, just might be getting worse and letting more air in. She's booked in for Friday to get the intake system and the solenoids looked at Hopefully that fixes it all! |
