smoke is definitely white not blue
not losing any coolant, well at least if i am it must be only tiny bits, I haven't filled it for a while and it hasn't gone below the line

I suggest possible cracked head or corroded jackets, that is if you are confident its not head gasket, when the head is cold water can weap into the bores, as the car heats up the alloy grows sealing the crack. hanse why you only see it on start up. if the overflow bottle loosing water to suggest this may be happening?

White smoke can also be over fueling/unburnt fuel which it seams to be by the way you say that cyclists have to stop.i won't overly affect you milage due to it stopping when it gets hot (possible oxy sensor) unsure.

Honestly it might be time to just throw an EL/AU motor in and start fresh.
Squealing will be a belt for sure, oil pressure taking a sec to jump up may be thick oil as suggested, or a dodgy sender/gauge taking a sec to register whats going on. Do you run the car on gas or petrol mainly? LPG setups sometime f**k up the trip comp reading. Overfuelling will be black smoke, water = white, oil = blue, generally.... |

Troy wrote: you dont do your own Maintenance do you depends what you mean by 'maintenance' I did my own oil change and filter change i do all the basics, coolant etc only things i don't do myself are things i don't have the equipment to do, or big jobs that i think are out of my league. at the moment i got 4 cars at home and only need 2 for daily driving so having the car off the road for a while to do a big job isn't really a problem at all... it's tempting to get an AU motor, but then again, i'm only on p plates for 12 more months. And after Ps I want to get either another 180sx or go v8... so i only gunna have this car for another year edit: i have basic tools but no hoist or anything like that

if you havent changed the trip comp data line to tee into one of the injector banks with the EL ECU, then its not working, so ignore the figures its giving you.
is it using oil? is it using water? whats the plug colour like? have you double and triple checked that you haven't just got a vacuum leak somewhere?

I `theoretically' agree that generally, with oil, you see a bluish smoke, however I've had two cases of valve stem seals , one on a 250 2V, one on the wife's 89 Celica, both gave white smoke on cold startup exactly as described here.. in neither case was there a hint of blue smoke or even an oily smell in the smoke...I'm thinking you could approach this in the same way as I did with the 250 - I started pulling it down figuring I'd give the valve seals a good look on the way and make a decision at the time before pulling the head..I had a look and lo and behold they looked shot.. I replaced them without removing the head (took only a few hours) to see how it would go and it cured the smoking completely.
If you are curious how to replace them without removing the head there's two ways - one involves compressed air in the spark plug hole but the method I used was a real bushie special - take that cylinder down to the bottom of its stroke, feed into the plug hole about 3 metres of nylon rope and wind the piston up - this compresses the rope against the valve so you can remove the collets and valve stem seals without the valves dropping .. I know, sounds really hokey but it works brilliantly!

any hose that come off the intake manifold.
for starters look for a hose that you might've inadvertently pulled off. check map sensor hose for cracks. the intake manifold itself, sometimes the bolts work loose.

Any chance that your headbolts need retensioning? Water might seep into the cylinders while cold through incorrectly sealed head gasket.

headbolts cannot be retensioned... to do it properly you must pull them out...Once they have been tensioned they stretch and then once loosened must be replaced... You will not be able to do headbolts yourself without an angle gauge (unless you guess it or make something)...

Unburnt fuel is black... Why don't you try pressurising the system (what workshops do) leave it overnight pressurised so its goes cool, any cracks will open, if the pressure drops overnight you have a leak, if water disappears you have a leak, don't try to start it if water goes missing and doesn't end up on the ground, you will bend a conrod, if water ends up in the cylinders the plugs must be removed to allow the water to excape otherwise you end up with a water lock there (unlike air water doesn't compress)... Again this requires the right tools to do... Cheers, Tim
