obviously you already have it diagnosed but just to add, the fact that the water was not in the oil even though it was obviously getting into the bores means its likely the rings are o.k. make sure the mechanic uses au gasket and head bolts.

most times on e series the head gasket is fine, its the head bolts that snap. this issue was fixed with au. gasket is better as well. any reputable mechanic should be aware of this

On these things you always replace the head bolts regardless if they have AU bolts or not, the extra $40 odd isn't worth skimping on.

AU head gasket eliminates the notorious e-series head gasket problems. Also, yes, the headbolts can slightly warp from the pressure they've been under for so long, leading to wrong tension in the head collaterally causing the head to warp.. I kept my old 1's on the EA cause I was a cheap a** and didn't give 2 f**k by that stage, (especially after after all the stuff I broke along the way and the fact I left about 3 bolts out of the exhaust manifold) to this day, i'm still stoked it started and made it to mildura!!! But if your keeping it, don't be cheap, it will save u later.

When this occurred to my EA, it wasn't the head gasket. We found porosity holes in #4 combustion chamber. #4 was filling up with coolant overnight. When I removed the spark plug coolant ran out. At that time the oil was also still clean.

You can never know 100% if it's a gasket or crack until you remove the head and inspect.
99% are gaskets, but they are known to crack if you over heat them of course. |

To be honest the only way to check a cylinder head ofr coolant leaks is a pressure test. We had some at REPCO that we had to pressure test hot cos they weren't leaking until the engine got to running temp. This is cos the crack opens up with the heat!

You have a right arm, if indicators don't work then stick your arm out the window.
From memory the only window that has to wind up and down is the drivers so you can stick your arm out the window to signal... That's law here in Vic. |

we have people sticking their arms out the window and signalling over here too. not sure if they're wanting to turn though.
