Saturday lunch time.
car starts fine, drove to shopping center. park it. go do whatever.. coem back and i turn the key and all i get is a click. All the lights stay on with key on start position, voltage guage reads about 12v but no cranking. So i thought maybe the amp in the boot is drawing heaps of power/whatever.. pull the fuse out and it turned over.. great i thought... car starts as per normal. driving down to melb stopped at the missus' uncles joint.. same again but this time i just waited about 20sec or so.. and it started... on the way back it did it again, and this time i popped the bonnet had a look around, nothing looked sus, tried it again and bang it worked. so what are my culprits? tis a new starter motor ... bout 8months old... i thought: auto inhibitor switch battery battery terminals wiring? Worst thing is, in order to find the problem it'll have to do it again and NOT start for me to really track it down... |

what model car do you have? my auto did this for a while the bendix drive gear would get thrown too far forward and jam but then would just come loose again. next time it happens pop the bonnet and see if you can turn the engine over with the belts or with a socket and ratchet

a couple of things it could be.
1 - starter relay 2 - typical BEM problem with dry solder joints. It dosen't sound like a key problem or a starter problem to me.

i'd start with checking simple things, like checking your battery terminals are clean and all connections to the starter motor are good and clean.

My fiance's car's BEM went about 2 months ago and was causing the no start situation.
Now My car's BEM has done exactally the same thing and it's getting fixed tomorrow. I think our cars might be suseptible to this bird flu that's going around. |

what does "getting it fixed" entail? any idea on price? next time it doesnt start (got it at work today, so today probably) i'll give it a tap and see what happens.. |

Getting it fixed entails replacement of the BEM.
I think it was about $500 when we got the Finace's car fixed, BUT, that included work done to the gear selector and some other things to the car. Maybe the $250 mark just for the BEM itself and labour. Also, if wiggling the gear selector helps it to start, then that's the inhibitor switch, not the BEM. They are different. Inhibitor switch simple stops you starting the car when anything other that P or N is selected. The BEM controls smart-lock, interior lighting, power windows, intermittent wiper timing etc etc etc. I think the BEM is located near the centre console. You could just replace it yourself if you feel up to it but if you do, you'll have to re-learn the keys to the smartlock before you can use your car again. There's a doco in the technical doco section on doing this. |
