mm being a Ea i am thinking it is either the EGR
exhasut gas recirculation where some exhaust gasses are brought back into the engine for emisions is it silver? could be a pre heat for the incoming air again to comply with emisons

it doesnt actually suck exhaust fumes just hot air from around the exhaust manifold. Its mainly there to warm the engine up quick on cold days i think? or maybe emissions. Didnt know anybody was still running a cpi car on here lol.

If its plumbed into the exhaust then its EGR - altho usually this is done via castings in the manifold and head.
If it just 'hovers' above a hot exhaust then chances are there is a summer/winter tap on the air filter - as per carby cars... Lol, yeah - get on to an MPFI conversion!!!

The hose is there to pump hot air straight into the snorkel, hence the name hot air duct however i'm not sure of what it achieves, maybe just an increased air flow.

If the pipe is a very fragile tin foil type and the car is CFI then it is to help in cold weather in smoother running when first started etc. usually has a temp controlled vac pipe near the tennis racket airfilter to block this off when engine temp is above a certain temp.
As far as I know no E serier had an EGR valve as everything was controlled by the ECU for emmisions.
