hey has anyone heard of a substance called naphthalene, it cost like $3 for 300grams, but aparently u can mix it with ya fuel and its like Octane... im not exactly familiar with the product, anyone heard of it?
aparently its the chemical in moth balls and it was tested on mythbusters... anywayz heres the full read up.. i know its on a commodore site.. but its a good read LINK : http://forums.justcommodores.com.au...27&page=1&pp=10

There was a thread on this from mothballs just before.

naphthalene = mothballs.
Most supermarket stocks them...

I saw the episode of mythbusters where they tested it, it was sick, worked VERY well....
However! Keep in mind they only tested it briefly and afterwards they made the engine seize up (After putting bleach + sugar + all sorts of other chemicals through). Has anyone actually tried this yet?? I dont think im game to try it even though it worked so well, they even said they dont reccomend putting mothballs in your engine |

ye i would like to see how it goes but im neither game enough, u dont actually have to put mothballs in it, its the chemical in it called naphthalene, u can buy a bag of naphthalene flakes for $3 its like 300grams worth

By the way, half these blokes on that Commodore forum are such idiots! They want to use this stuff as an octane booster, but they still run 91RON fule! I mean if you wanted an octane boost your first step would be to run 98RON and then mix this stuff if you wanted more! Quote: The reason for the power gain is the removel of the lube in the fuel, the engine they did it on was a old carbie leaded engine, and the mothballs remove the lead as they desolve It can't be a good thing to keep your engine lasting if it's removing the lube. Quote: muahhaha i've gone one better than mothballs and i've found %100 pure napthalene flakes.. so i did a test on some fuel in a jerry can .. the flakes dissolve into the fuel easily so theres no breakin up mothballs or sediment sitting anywhere.. i spoke to my old chemistry teacher from high school (he used to work for ESSO so i guess he knows about petroleum chemistry quite well) and he reckons that given the properties of 91RON fuel, and the potency of the pure napthalene, he recommended that if i "Have to bloody well do it, you absolute tosser, use 100g per 20L Premium Unleaded" - qoute any more he says will be pushing your luck. im not gonna ask him to elaborate on that one! i did that about an hour ago, filled her up adding 300g of pure napthalene ($3 from the local shop!) and ran it in.. I guess if anyone is planning on doing it, don't go over 100g's per 20L. Quote: heheheheh mate did it to his datto 120y except he put 30 moth balls in to 10 ltrs of fuel needles to say he drove it around for 5 mins and then the carby went through the bonnet at a million miles an hour lol so if you mix to much you just get a scoop hole for ya that ya dont have to cut out lol Always someone who takes it too far... Quote: Yes, mothballs will slightly assist the octane rating of gasoline. HOWEVER, in that grain of truth there lurks the potential for disaster. One must use very few mothballs (naphthalene only) because the ratio of carbon to hydrogen in the molecules makes for a very dirty burning fuel. Too many mothballs and your engine will load up with carbon deposits -- very bad news in the performance department. Quote: Mothballs is an old way of improving octane ratings in fuel we used it 20 years ago in the trucks we drove up and down the highway(Detroit Diesels).The biggest downfall is that after prolonged use it can gum up your injectors.
If anyone tries it, remember to remind us in a few months if you have any pro0blems that you were running this stuff. Last edited by twr7cx on Tue May 10, 2005 10:05 pm, edited 3 times in total. |

Toluene is a much more reliable octane booster.

toluene is a solvent
there was a bit of a bust on it with smaller servos in sydney a couple of years ago wh were watering thier petrol down with toluene..... too much and it has detrimental effects in your fuel system

Toluene is also used to make TNT and isnt very easy to get, it would be easier to purchase napthalene flakes. Keep in mind though when some goodie 2 shoes sees the sales of nap flakes go through the roof they will prolly cotton on to what people are doing with it and it will be removed from shelves like all other good fun products. ie fire crackers and phospherous fertelizers

ok,can i just ask whats wrong with good old 'octane booster' 'available retailers and service stations' LOL
also what is the chemical in that that adds to octane?? and...how would a standard engine put up with premo fuel PLUS octane booster??
