Depends on the quality of job you want.
you'd be better off buying a vrs kit with all the gaskets, coolant and headbolts first and having it ready. Then saving up a few hundred more as an incentive. Also decide weather you want the head resurfaced (recommended~$88) or just a new gasket thrown in. Either way if I was in the position to help you if do it for around $250 $300 if you already had the parts. If you can find a workshop that'll do it for $750 or so I'd deffinantly do that so you could have some warranty. |

I'd be questioning any workshop willing to do it without a full reco job on the head.

I'd be questioning a shop that would do a full reco on a i6 head just cos the headgasket is blown. (unless customer wants it).
Money hungry. We do plenty of headgaskets wich get a shave and valve stem seals if they need it. You're talking about turning a sub 1000$ job into easy $1500-$2200job, maybe more! On a car worth realistically 2k or less, it's just not worth it and usually not needed. |

Its relatively cheap to reco a head. If they are shaving it, they are going to reseat the valves, ir they are going to reseat the valves they are going to drop in now valve stems. Any coroded water galleries are going to be welded. its pretty quick and easy to do. And would come in under or close to $1000 installed and returned to the customer including consumables.
If your not going to reco the head in this manner, there is no point doing it in the first place. Last head I had reco'd was $179. for $250 they were going to clean up the ports and what not. Opted against that as I was doing it myself.

On a car worth realistically 2k or less, it's just not worth it and usually not needed. If you think it's not usually needed on 15 year+ old falcons you need to take your welding helmet off while you're working. That or you're blind. It's not about trying to get more money, it's about doing the job properly. The value of the car is irrelevant to me, The job is based off the condition of the parts. The owner can make up his/her mind as to it being worth it. If they are not happy with the cost of doing the job properly they can pay the labour to strip and inspect and take the car away. I've always said, If the customer doesn't want to do the job properly there are plenty of half a*** mechanics around that will do a half a*** job for them. I'm not interested in s**t quality half a*** work. Take note people Pakrat IS one of those half a*** workshops, If you want a cheap nasty job, go to him. How may of these head do you even have hardness tested? A soft head is the perfect way for you to make more money, the gasket will fail again in no time and then you can do a second half a*** job, you may even get a third out of them if they don't wake up to it and go somewhere els. |

+1 on getting the head reco'd...it'll be much better in the long term. Do it properly the first time.

Hahaha.
Half assed all the way man. "Dodgy brothers bush mechanical" that's what our business is named...... I dunno what sorta falcons you usually get in. If we get people who actually care about there car then yes usually they go for a reco and bottom end aswell. But when you get mostly e series with over 400,000ks beat to hell and lucky to even make it to the next rego inspection, people won't spend more then they have to to get it running half decent. It's what they ask for. People where I come from don't have alot of money, and less to spend on their s**t cars. It isn't us being dodgy half assed mechanics, it's us working around a quote or price limit that the customer has set and is aware of the circumstances. Open you're mind before you run you're mouth about people. We can't all be rich. |

i have an ef falcon and wanted to pt an au head gasket in and have the head reco'd. i wanted to do as much work myself as possible. i have the work shop manual and a friend that knows a s**t, just wondering if you had any suggestions on getting the job done right, or if you think is best to send it off. if i have to take it to a mechanic, how long do you think it should take?

do it yourself with your mate who knows what he is doing, save $$'s. Its not hard to do. Take the head off, take it to a machine shop, while its there, clean up the block surface.
Get it backbang it all together. If your mate really knows what he is doing, then piece of cake. You will save 400-600 bucks, depending where you go. buy everything off ebay in prep. Get new head bolts as they are TTY and NOT reusable.
