Hi one eyed ford monsters
I need a runabout car to park at the station when going to work and possibly drive to QLD at end of year for a holiday. No mods intended. what is the best buy for a couple of thousand $$$ VN-VR V6 VS EB/EF I6 or VN-VR 5.0 VS EB/EF 5.0 V8 What do you reckon is the best runnabout, be fair, dont be wearing your one eyed ford goggles...

get an EF, you can get a gli at auctions pretty cheap.
imo the dash looks alot better than the vn/vr's! also won't be such a target as a vn-vr i dont think!

Get a ford V8.
Those engines will still be in good nick once the sun has burned out and the planet is devoid of human life. Lol. If you want an engine that'll give you another 250,000km on top of the 250,000 its already done... then there's no point looking past an EFI 302 windsor. EF/EL is a good chassis for runabout (generally well built... interiors hold up well, considering they are mid/late 1990s plastic fantastic), but the I6 engine is a ticking time bomb... not usually a big problem but it sounds like you're looking for a "no fuss"/low maintenance car. VN-VR chassis are not doing well for their age IMO. Exterior and interior condition of the EF/EL much better in most of the examples ive seen recently.

if its going to be parked at the train station go the falcon, simply because they are slightly harder to steal.
for a s**t runabout either car would be ok

The vn 5 litres have a bit more poke than my ef xr8. Still it really is up to you as to what you want. Its not hard to find a clean reliable example of either brand, Just make sure it hasnt been thrashed.

EF I6. Check out the torque figures and where it's produced. EF or EL I6 wins. Flawless victory...almost...

ef v8, same as what 4.9 said.
engine that will go forever, produces awesome torque off idle and really uses no more fuel than the 6 when driven sensibly (with awesome hwy mileage) - the efs are harder to steal and less of a target than the equivalent commodore, and as a rule, they have better quality interior. |

not in nsw but good comfy runabout. don't want an eb v8 do you I like those EB V8s. But Dont want to spend up on one so probably cant have one as i dont want a 200,000km version. Specially when i stepped out of a 65,000km example. You can find em cheap but most of the time the auto is gone or or they make some foul noises. You might as well spend up initially because all the repairs to a lesser example might cost you more..
