Its a Ford Fairmont 1992 on duel fuel. The car has made more than 300,000 kms. The crankshaft is making clonking noises and the engine is leaking oil. How do i take the engine out or whats the easiest way to do it? I intend to put it back. Do i disconect it from the gearbox first (if yes, how?) or do i take the whole thing out including the gearbox? Regarding the LPG, is the gas going to get automatically cut off when i disconnect the supply to the engine or do i have to do it myself? Any advice, Thanx.

Not sure about the LPG stuff.
I prefer to leave the gearbox in. Just support it with a jack when you take the engine out, and then put a piece of wood between the chassis rails and stick the bolts through to hold it while the engine is out.

correct much, much easier, unless you like to spend hours trying to line an engine and gearbox up. Gearbox needs the rear plugged or fluid dropped out (good excuse for a new filter and new fluid [but its not all that cheap]), otherwise fairly straight forward, done it plenty of times.

yes do take out the box and motor. in one .as there is not much room to get motor out .as you need to get motor away from box .so it is easyer to take out in one .you can reasemble it while it is out .etc. like startermotor and all other things

I would hardly say its much easier. The difference between the two methods is: Engine only: - Remove starter motor - Remove lower bellhousing guard and undo converter bolts - Support gearbox, undo bellhousing bolts - Pull engine away from gearbox and lift Engine and trans: - Remove tailshaft and plug output shaft - Remove shifter - Undo trans oil lines (and plug before they drop crap all over the driveway) - unbolt rear crossmember - Pull engine out If you pull the engine out on its own you can drop it straight onto an engine stand. If you pull the gearbox out with it, you have to then seperate them by doing everything you would otherwise have to do to just take the engine out. I always pulled them out together but now unless the trans needs to come out I leave it in.

i ll probably just take the engine out by itself then cause it sounds easier, but is it really that hard to line up the engine with the gearbox afterwards???

Not unless your stoned, drunk and physically disabled. BTW - I looked at how my workshop manual says to remove it (never looked before) and it says remove the engine on its own.

ive done count less motors and trannies. From VC - VT commies and XE - AUIII. I personally think its easier to take the both of them out. Only thing is u need a yolk which u can get from any pull it urself wreckers.
