Remove sender unit, and fit a capillary gauge, to get an accurate reading........you don't see the V8 Touring car guys using factory gauges, eh?.....coz they ain't accurate.
Can't remember the size....14mm.....9/16".....16mm...5/8"....17mm....an open ender spanner.

Going for a drive in my ef xr6 now, will take a note of oil pressure readings and post back here soon(car has factory oil pressure sender and it works).Make sure you are using correct viscosity oil,as I have had the oil pressure guage give me funny readings when i used thicker oil a few years back, switched to 10w40 Castrol magnatec and oil pressure readings back to normal.

Sorry, didnt go for a drive yesterday, the guage readings you have listed above are normal as long as guage needle does not go into orange zone and oil pressure warning light does not illuminate(page 33 of owners manual states "it is normal for the guage to indicate low pressure(approaching orange sector)when engine is idling at normal operating temperature."
The oil guage (in the dash) reads variable resistance form the oil sender(on engine). The oil pressure guage in the instrument cluster can be checked by connecting a variable resistance tester to the oil pressure sender electrical connector(Ford dealers or auto electrician will have one of these testers).Resistance values(taken from factory ef workshop manual) for oil pressure guage are as follows:0(low)=0ohms,1=20ohms,2=31ohms,3=41ohms,4=50.8ohms,6=66ohms,7(high)=80ohms. If guage resistance values are correct, problem exists with the sender unit.If not, problem is in the guage or wiring harness. Note that oil pressure warning lamp should illuminate at position 1(according to workshop manual). I will post what my oil pressure guage readings are as soon as I go for a drive.Car is 95 ef2 xr6 manual, 156000km and is currently running nulon 10w40 full synthetic engine oil and still has factory fitted oil sender guage/instrument cluster. Sorry for writing a book, but hope this helps you. |

Ok...Finally went for a drive..@3.8 at fast idle cold,3.1 at idle warm,3.8-4 at 60 to 100kmh.Certainly different to your readings above.Oil pressure guage never dropped below about 3.1 and never went above 4.Car has factory XR6 motor, standard apart from 2.5 inch Redback cat back exhaust.
