F***! I just called up to enquire about my car and i find out the head damage isnt all that bad which is good news, but f**k have they pulled one over on me or something...?

I was told they found the reason why the tensioner chain and guides broke was because of a bearing for the oil pump which is apparently very damaged. He told me that this was a common problem with fords and to fix it reqires another $1000!!!!!

f**k this is s**t, i have the worst luck with mechanics, he said if he just puts the head back on and puts the new chain and guides on etc.. 10000kms down the track my car will be f**k again? And all the $$$$ i speant was for nothing. :(

Does this sound like s**t?

Sounds like you have a problem with the auxillary shaft, and yes you will need to fix that otherwise it will just screw everything again, I dont have an idea of what a mechanic would charge to fix something like that considering your engine is already in pieces. what he speaks does not appear to be s**t tho.

Well from what he told me was that the surface for the bearing is not a smooth surface anymore and said it was quite course. And because of that sometime soon down the track the car was just gonna f**k up again.

Damn it i dont have $2500 to fix the car either, $1400 was okay but f***.

Apparently if i wish to put in a new engine im looking at $3000 or so. I dont know what to do?

Ive got no car for a while thats for sure

well if what he is saying is fact, then yes you will be driving a long and that shaft will sieze up and basically rip you timing chain to shreds,

3k for a new motor?!?!? i suppose it is a tickford item, might be better off just getting a standard motor from the wreckers for now, would be nice and cheap, and then keep your tickford motor until you can fix it, or put the tickford head on the standard engine one day.

For now Id just pick the car up from the mechanic. Your going to cop a labor charge though.

Your best bet might be just to throw a 2nd hand engine in it until for now then get the ticky engine rebuild later. Id be surprised if you couldnt get a low k 2nd hand engine in for under 1k.

Mmm well im on my way to the mechanics now as im going in for inspection of the car, if he can let me look at it and and SHOW me the problem then it will make it easier for me to make a decision.

If he offers me no warranty on the parts or work then i know hes f**k me around.

Anyways i will post back later on today to find out wtf is going to happen to my baby.

I dont think the prices are that steep. $3000 for a reconditioned tickford motor fitted is not over the top. Its just that there are much cheaper alternatives you could consider first.

eg -

You should be able to get a standard 4.0 for $300-$600 in good condition.

You should be able to get a low-k AU 4.0 for $500 to $1000

Add some for fitting (some SA members could probably help you out) and your car would be back on the road for under your origional $1400 quote and you would have the tickford engine in the shed to work on.

oh and btw - if he is talking about the AUX shaft surface at the front of the block id just get a new short engine, recon it and your tickford head and use that.

One thing you guys are forgetting, the Tickford motor is no different to stock except for the head and cam.
I'd be inclined to get a change over bottom end and throw your head on, the thing with the job he's doing is there is a lot of labour.
With an engine change it's not so labour intense and you'll get more for your money.
Call around and get prices on change over short motors.

3k isnt too bad for a new motor reall. thats what me an the old man paid for the one in mine. which was a reco'd EL motor, which was a short motor might i add for 1600 then there is the labout which was around 900ish. any extra parts, such as oil, filter and small s**t like that, new head bolts. we went down this track as the head had only been done 500km before the bottem end blew. if it were to include all accessories it would be good but a bare motor wouldnt be worth the 3k in my opinon

Well im getting a full written quote on the work that is needed to be done, then from thier im working out what im going to do.

I went to the mechanics and saw what was worn and yes doesnt look good, the area that the bearing sits in that runs the oil pump is worn and has worn one side of the area and created a lip, i looked at the tension chain and yep its definately broken.

Thier would have ben a bit of play in the bearing which would have caused the chain to wear out.

They suggested i reco the bottom end of the engine, to fix the problem...... But we will see.

Will let you guys know more after the weekend.

Cheers for the help..

So $900 for a 2nd hand motor

+ cost of parts to recon

+ cost of labor to recon

+ cost of labor to install

+ warranty

Is 3K really that bad?
