Replaced my pump a few days ago, and the new increased pressure has revealed a bad leak at the union bolt metal fitting, on the hose that goes to the rack, that goes into the large bolt on the back of the power steering pump.
It's the one that's apparently normal, for it to swivel around fairly easily. Is this a hard fix at all? |

It can be fixed by replacing the nut on the end of the hose (pump end). You can get them new from Ford for about $16.00.
You'll have to cut/grind the last few threads off the original nut to get to the internal circlip. Just take it slowly and don't cut the pipe. Once you have the circlip off the nut will come off. Screw the new nut into the pump a little ways and then push the pipe into it until it clicks. All done. Cheers RD

Thanks mate. Silly question. How does that valve work, why is it designed to move around fairly freely, is that a pressure relief valve or something?

Not sure why it is what it is, I can only assume to cater for engine movement. Inside the nut is a circlip and an oring and on the outside is a teflon washer. The circlip clips onto a groove in the pipe allowing it to rotate, the internal oring stops fluid coming out the back and the teflon one seals the nut into the pump. Cheers RD

Ok I had the whole hose and union fitting replaced from the rack to the pump. And fcuk me wouldn't you know it, it's still leaking from exactly the same point. The "new" steel union fitting.
Is it possible my rack is finished, which is creating high pressure which forces oil through that union. Or is the recon power steering pump possibly not up to scratch do you think. Bloody nightmare this car sometimes. It is the most stubborn car I've come across. |

Hi
I think I have the same problem as you. I have a leak from my power steering tank - I thought it was the nut because I tighten it up and the leak dissapeared, but after a few days it came back again. See photo below - for the nut that I tightened (circled in red) Attachment:

Are you sure that was the one. Might be the pully side?
Mine is on the back there. |
