They run on argon (i think its that) and yeah as said has a thin piece of wire that comes out of the gun, the gas works as a form of flux for the wire to work. Phong you are talking about arc, or commonly called a "stick welder" as it uses a stick or electrode in the end of a holder. Then theres oxy acetylene welding/brazing/soldering etc. Who said school didnt teach kids anything. (chances are i got something wrong in there, i'm happy to learn if someone corrects me). Thats pretty much it. The gas most ppl use is a called argoshield light (just a mixture of aargon and carbon dioxide) which is cheaper but not suitable for all metals. The smaller cheaper MIGs use gasless wire as well which is basically wire coated in the same stuff thats used for the sticks in arc welding. The wire is more expensive than gas wire but you dont need to rent a bottle and pay for refils so it works out cheaper for small projects.

You also can use carbon dioxide as shielding gas, it should be used for when higher penetration is needed and when using higher current.

That really depends on what your doing. Seeing what barry has done on his XM project car with a little gasless mig shows that you dont need to spend big $ on a welder. oh, and I have a CIG mig as well. Not the greatest welder around but for the price im not complaining.

You can use a stick welder on an exhaust, theres no difference in how it welds. Just a little different in how it is to use. Edit, if its stainless then you cant use a stick welder, you'll need a Mig, and special wire.

You could use a stick but chances are you'll just blow a heap of holes through it (unless your a decent welder).

phongus wrote: which one is the mig welder i dunno anythign about welding.....which one is the one with like the big chuncky transformer looking thing where all the electrical output comes from.....and u have to wire a negative to metal and then u have the positive with a piece of stick which when u push against the metal attached to the negative it starts to weld? is that a mig welder?
btw i wanna know because i can get my hands on one of those and want to put the exhaust in sometime but by myself. phong =P~ thats an ARC welder, youll be wanting a MIG to do your exhaust. if you dont even know what an ARC welder looks like i doubt you could sustain the arc long enough to weld anything

Not neccesarily, depends on settings on both machines, but you are more likely to blow holes in it with a stick welder then what you are with a MIG.

MIG is much much easier if your in an enclosed space like the underside of a car

mig is just better all round unless your in a really windy place....i rather just crank the gas right up though im not paying for it.
But i somehow think were all getting offtopic here If you look in the trading post you can sometimes find second hand decnent single phase migs

I find stick much easier in confined spaces. With the MIG if im forced to hold the gun out of position I cant see what I am doing (found this recently when welding under the dash), but with a sick i can just chop 1/2 if it off or bend it and I can see what i am doing.

You can get stainless rods for a ARC (stick as you call it) we use them all the time at work.
