which one is the mig welder i dunno anythign about welding.....which one is the one with like the big chuncky transformer looking thing where all the electrical output comes from.....and u have to wire a negative to metal and then u have the positive with a piece of stick which when u push against the metal attached to the negative it starts to weld? is that a mig welder?
btw i wanna know because i can get my hands on one of those and want to put the exhaust in sometime but by myself. phong =P~

Thats an arc welder. Mig welder has a gun through which thin wire is pushed.
Arc is good for welding thick metal, but almost useless for working on cars.

i think ur torking about the electrode holder, and all the wires coming out are earth leads and positive fo the electrode. Mig welder Runs on gas

mig welders dont 'run' on gas. They work in the same way as arc using high currents to melt the wire/stick. The gas that is usally (but not always) used with mig welding is for shielding only.

Mmmm love MIG welders, good things they are.
They run on argon (i think its that) and yeah as said has a thin piece of wire that comes out of the gun, the gas works as a form of flux for the wire to work. Phong you are talking about arc, or commonly called a "stick welder" as it uses a stick or electrode in the end of a holder. Then theres oxy acetylene welding/brazing/soldering etc. Who said school didnt teach kids anything. (chances are i got something wrong in there, i'm happy to learn if someone corrects me).

An Arc welder is a Mig welder, it uses an arc or electricity to melt the wire. It doesnt necessarily have to use gas either. You can get gasless Mig wire, which you have to use outside in windy conditions or when welding certain metals. The gas is there to shield the weld pool from contaminents in the atmosphere.
Its a stick welder which is often (incorrectly) referred to as an arc welder.

Argon is used for alluminium
Agroshield/corogon is used for mild steel. Dont ever buy a gasless mig, they are useless crap and never buy cig migs. They used to be "the s**t" now there just plain s**t
