Hi all
i need to put a new timing chain in the car as it has streched, just wandering how difficult it is to put new chain and guides on an EF. i dont want to take the head off. Is it as simple as taking the timing cover off replace the chain and guides then line all the timing marks back up again? im not afraid to do the work my self as i installed the head on my car. i just want to know if there is anything i should look out for? cheers Simon

take all the bits off the front of the motor, remove radiator, pull harmonic balancer off, release chain tension, drop the sump a bit, undo all bolts take cover off, replace whats needed then put it all back together.

hello all,
i finally got a chance to replace the timing chain, but i have come to a problem. how do you undo the bolt on the harmonic balancer? is there a way to lock the engine to stop it moving? thanks in advance for your help. Simon

Hey Simon,
Are you sure the chain has stretched? it appears to be a common problem with heads which have been heavily machined to hear the timing chain slapping around. I was advised to space up the timing chain tensioner but never got around to trying it, and always just put up with the slight slap at low rpm on both my high compression 4L's.

when you go to line up the timing marks to tdc on the balancer and cam sprocket, the cam sprocket mark is about 10-15 degrees above where the mark should be.
it was still in the acceptable 3-5 degrees above the mark when i put the head on. i cant be certain that the chain is streched till i get the timing cover off and line up the timing marks on the cranck sprocket and aux sprocket.

does anybody know how to undo the harmonic balancer bolt so i can remove it to get the timing cover off?
the max elerys manual i got just says to put it in gear and chock the back wheels but that does not help as i have an auto.

i think the best way to do it is to get a large breaker bar on there, get someone to hold it and crank the engine, dont lets it start though take the leads off should stop it from starting

At the wrecker we undid the harmonic balancer by using a big f**k off breaker bar and a impact socket and we put a impact socket in the teeth of the flywheel and turned the harmonic balancer till the bolt held the motor from spinning. This was when the motor was out. If that didnt work we just used the impact gun and it was all cool. No holding anything.

I would have suggested doing the compressed air in one cylinder trick, but that doesnt matter now. Have fun scraping off the gasket around the water pump
