HELLLLP!.....I've just finished fitting a rebuilt EF engine, EL BBM, and EL ECU (with smartlock bypass & TI Performance J3 Chip). I've read BenJ & Troyman's engine conversions and basically followed what they've done. Unfortunately, the new engine won't start or run without some carby cleaner sprayed in it. Then, it splutters and dies after about 5 seconds. I'm hoping the more learned people on the forum might have some ideas about what's wrong, or what I can check next.
Here's the situation at the moment: * It's taken about 2 months of spare time to remove the old engine & auto and install the new engine & manual gearbox (double-checking everyting as I went) by myself. * Yesterday, an auto electrician checked to make sure the injectors are getting the pulses from the ECU, and that they have power. He also checked the leads for spark. Following his recommendations, I've replaced the fuel pump and battery. (He managed to singe his hair & eyebrows when the motor fired and flames came out of the throttle body because used too much carby cleaner). * I'm about to replace the standard fuel reg with an 300kPa XR6 fuel reg (not cheap at $131 from Bursons) * The spark plugs, leads, starter motor, and coil were transferred from the EA block and worked OK * The BBM loom was purchased from someone else and plugs straight into the EA plugs. I've extended some wires to sensors at the thermostat housing. * The distributor is new and correctly placed (after about 6 tries) to allow advance/retard. TDC timing marks were all checked numerous times during the rebuild and against No. 1 on the distributor. * There are no plugs loose or disconnected wires. The EA Auto control box on the side of the old pedal box was turfed and the loom taped up on top of the new pedal reinforced manual pedal box. * The fuel in the tank is Premium Unleaded * I've tried 3 ECUs with Smartlock and nothing changes * The injectors are reco ones from the EA engine and worked OK Can anyone think of something I've missed? I found that, as mobile mechanics and auto electricians don't want to touch these cars, I need some advice from others who've done this conversion instead. Thanks in advance.

Was your car a CPI (not multi point) originaly?
If it was you need to change one wire in the engine bay loom for the ISC to function properly. A simple cut and shut. It's in the technical documents section under the MPFI conversion.

Looks like I forgot some vital information.
The EA has MPFI, and the dizzy was out 180 degrees. I noticed the error when black smoke was backfiring out the TB. After I fixed it, the engine was starting (with caby cleaner) but not running for long. Is too much carby cleaner is bad for the newly honed bores?

Is your fuel pump running alright? Making much noise? How olds the fuel? How old is the fuel filter?

Me for one I understand it has mpfi as you've said now, by way of bbm, but if it started off as cpi then that wires your answer. You probably meant that it was mpfi but I had to be sure cos that'l f**k you. ...+1 for checking the fuel lines right way round...

Yep, fuel pump is new and making a (quieter) hum when the ignition comes on. The fuel lines are the right way around too. The auto electrician measured the current at the fuel pump relay and it was only 2 amps. He reckons it should be 4 amps normally. I suppose I could unhook the fuel line and run the pump to double check.
It seems like a fuel problem, but I've been wrong before with hunches.

+2 for the fuel lines........and as you said the dizzy 180 deg out..
If it runs on carby cleaner, it should run....no fuel no run...... Having said that, could be a dozen other reasons, most of which wouldn't make any sense.... Good luck Daz

TROYMAN wrote: Shortshift wrote: just to confirm! you know the fuel line from the pump goes to the fuel rail and the return line comes from the reg. Errr..... I disconnected the fuel lines originally at night and probably didn't pay close attention to this. I thought the fuel regulator monitors the flow into the fuel rail (like engines with carbys), not out of it. That would explain why the gauge on the adjustable fuel regulator I tried doesn't work. It worked when I pressurised it with air, but not fuel. I was thinking it has to be something simple that I've overlooked or not connected properly. I'll try swapping the lines tonight. Thanks Troyman, and you other guys for input.
