Hi everyone,
I have just purchased a xr6 50th anniversary ford falcon. Just wandering if there are any known problems or things to watch out for (having a bad history of problems with the ba). Thanks, |

The list is looooooong.
Rust seems to be the flavor of the month. There is a thread on AFF with 3,100 posts on the subject of FG's and problems. Almost double the size of the BA/BF threads combined. |

Nah, I wouldn't say they are bad...
There is alot of whinging in that thread over common problems. But each car has common problems. Sometimes just depends if your vehicle has been blessed with them or not. Rust, diff bushes, rattles/squeaks, fading screens, inaccurate fuel gauges and s**t headlights seem to be the most common. A work colleague was telling me about his previous model Golf GTI the other day. The bolts that hold the engine cross member to the chassis are prone to stretching by themselves, leaving the engine to move around and make banging noises when you go over sharp bumps. VW's fix is to tighten the nuts at every service until they break, then replace with the same model bolt. Every manufacturer is the same, its just the level of expense you've put into the car in the first place. |

Yeah, the VE's are just as bad.
Dud electrics, batteries that flatten themselves at will, bad bushes, recalls galore, etc, etc. But like all of them, there are good and bad ones. One of the guys here at work has never had a fault with his. Just gets serviced every 15,000km and washed every 30,000km. His only complaint is it's just gutless (3L Omega). And this is one of the cars delivered in the first few months of the VE's release. Whereas the other 2 that park next to it (One Calais and one SS) are back and forth to their dealers on a regular basis. |

thanks mate,
Yeah i guess no cars are perfect, just some are less likely to get problems then others. Would you happen to know if the same ba problem with the radiator leak into the transmission is a possibility in the fg's? dont want to go through getting the transmission rebuilt again |

So far, the only cars I have seen with this trouble has been the BF's, not seen on an FG yet.
I think the FG is a good car and the most we have changed at work has been the HIM (HVAC Integrated Module) and the Indicator switch assy, plus a few mirrors. |

It's bolted to the rear left side of the block. Its basically a mini radiator thats not a radiator. So, no, trans cooling isn't done via the radiator anymore. I have read of a few BF's, mainly ZF's, where the heat exhanger has leaked into the auto trans fluid in the same manner as BA radiators. Can't say I've read of this happening on an FG yet, but there is a possibility. Unfortunately the design looks the same. Seems to be more of a problem on modified vehicles and age. Maybe they aren't keeping up with coolant changes. Alot of the guys are bypassing the factory heat exchanger in general and mounting an external cooler. Would be a problem for warranty though. |

Thanks, Hey Matty, I've had my 2008 FG XR6 for about 7 months now and the only problem (touch-wood) I've had was a faulty ambient temperature sensor in the left door mirror. Funny thing is that I had bought a pair of aftermarket mirrors with repeaters on them and the temp sensor in that works 100% accurate I drive it daily and have done a few 700km trips in it without any issues. I run it on Shell V-power and even drive it a bit hard every now and then (but haven't got around to testing the speed limiter yet ). I'm extremely happy with my purchase (and no, I don't work for Ford).

fg issues, squeaks and rattles, the cluster screen fades out in hot weather, (like a summers day at about 1pm), and the interior seems to be held together with the least number of fastners possible. otherwise good car, comfortable, and easy to drive.

I believe that inadequate/weak air con cooling in the cabin, is an issue.

don't the 6spd autos come with an external trans cooler, mines got one, his is a50th anniv. And no matter what ford related forum you look at you see people asking about issues and common faults after they have already bought thier car. How many people buy cars without doing even a small amount of research? like seriously.
