well, i took my car into the ford mechanic as it was missing hard (also i had a lil collent leak,i wasnt to worried about that) So it ended up being the spark leads got them all replaced and now it drives beautiful again. But i got the bad news too ,my head gasket is f**k and thats where the collents leaking form so i need to get it replaced & its gonna cost around $900 possible more, is this price ok?? also would it be worth taking it somewhere else just to make sure its the gasket??

$900 not bad, I've heard of worse!
That being, I had mine done for $715, including genuine Ford gaskets, New Genuine head bolts, Head inspected and machined by All Head Services & 2 year nationwide warranty.

Also they will need my car for 2 days.... is this normall? |

yeah they can be any where between 600 and 1200 depending on the condition of the head. i've seen some heads need $500 worth of work just to get them useable again. 6 hour labor is around $460., gaskets, new head bolts, thermostat, and posibly radiator and heater hoses.
when i did mine i spent $650 on parts and head reco. |

I did mine about 3 months ago, the headgasket kit (AU Metal, including exhaust and intake) cost me $100 or so, the head cost me $120 to weld and machine, and new bolts were $40...
I replaced all hoses, had the injectors cleaned ($150) and used Toyota Coolant (red stuff, $80 4/L x2) and it was a piss easy job... As you can see its pretty cheap in parts, its the labour that kills the cost.

thats true. it seems to be a good time to replace a few things.
i spent i think around 700 on parts cause while it's all apart, may as well replace the water pump, timing chain etc. And it is a pig of a job so it's not suprising what they quote you for it. anything under 1000 is reasonable imho

They also had my car for 2 days, as they send the head to All Head Services they don't get it back until the next day. A Workshop that has the right equipment could do it in 1 day depending on what work is required.

i'd expect to pay about 700 for a head gasket. I wouldn't pay more. it's a common job, mechanics should be used to it by now lol!
on a side note, if your handy with a spanner do it yourself. I did my headgasket for a grand total of $23. That was cost on a gasket and some Hylomar to seal it a bit better. Reused the same bolts and manifold gaskets and just sanded down the block. Since then it had twin turbo's on it and didn't miss a beat

Iv'e been quoted around $1200-$1300 for that kind of work on mine...

got two quotes for mine: $1400 and 800 for exactly the same thing.
tuned out to be a dirty injector and weeping side tank on the radiator!!

A good mechanic wont give you a quote on haveing a head gasket done...
Way too many variables that are unknown until the work is being carried out. The head may be cracked, may / may not need machining etc... You even may need to have a replacement head... I just had mine done, and i had to have the head replaced. At the same time, i had a new back axel / diff put in also... Total cost for the new diff / axel, head, gaskets and bolts was $800, with $400 in labour... So all in all the job only cost $1200... Very happy with that price. |

thats hardly a reason for it be a cheap job. it still take the same amount of time and parts still cost the same |

i did mine myelf for $300 parts and my own labor. its about 4-5 hours work. dont gt it done at ford there are a rip off.

Im a 2nd year apprentice mechanic working with my old man, he used to work at a Ford dealership for 15 years before he started his own business. Anyway If me and him get stuck into it we can remove and replace the falcon head gaskets in about 3 hours, give or take about an hour and a half to send it out to get machined. So if all you guys are gettin quotes for 6 hours labour id be telling them to stick it! Your better off doing it your selves if you have some good tools and reasonable knowhow! The falcon heads are suseptable to warping but its not often that they crack unless theyve been severely over heated.

I wouldnt be using it in my falcon thats for sure!! |
