Hi Guys! I've just bought a new headgasket kit for my ED falcon. But I'm not sure what is this thick gray ring for? Any idea?

Thats a part that you hurl at the wall when its all going wrong :)

I believe its the seal between the two halves of the standard exhaust manifold.

did you buy the au gasket kit, ive heard its better, and gives better compression

Thanx guys. As for head gasket no, it's not AU matal one. I was gona get one, tried all local shops, but none of them have them in stock.
Further more, I tried to order it but they can't get it. I've been told that those are genuine AU models, but they fit them only in factory. They reffered me to go to a Ford dealer if I really want that type.
I simply CBF, so I ended up buying this headgasket. This headgasket alone is 90$. I reckon it should be all right..
There are also some new tupes of headgaskets on market called "copperhead headgasket". Has anyone heard of those?

Yes. New head bolts, head gasket kit, engine coolant, distributor cap, Bosh spark plag leads, Bosh super 4 spark plags, torque wrentch, new chrome-vanadium 43 Pce socket set, blue RTV silicone gasket maker, "Hylomar" gasket jointing compound and this is all I think I need, or did I forget something? Actually I'm thinking I might as well change all the belts on the engine while the radiator is out.

Looks like you've got everything covered. That kit includes valve stem seals, do you have or have access to a Valve Spring Compressor?

simple...... if you want to get your valves out to replace the valve stem seals, you'll need a valve spring compressor

While you have head off this is a worthwhile and simple job, although it can be done with the head on it is easier IMO to do them when the head is off. (to do them with the head on would also require a air compressor )
Why you need to do them. When the valve stem seals wear oil leaks down the valve and into the combustion chamber. This is evident by blue smoke visable out of exhaust imediately following startup.

You can pick up a valve spring compressor faily cheaply from Bursons, Repco etc.

I would suggest getting the head serviced. It can be very worthwhile so you don't have to pull it apart down the track again. Do it right the first time!!!!!

Also remember to put the silcone on to the block from the timing cover rubber gasket

May aswell have the head sent away to me machined and tested, they can do the valve stem seals at the same time. Its also very wise to have the radiator flushed.
Be very careful with the timing chain guide when removing/fitting head as its very brittle and easy to break.
