Hey guys,
A bit frustrated at the moment. Just put a new set of hydraulic lifters in my ef xr6 only to still have the ticking sound on start up still. I have put new oil and its still doing it. I did notice though that one of my old lifters had some sort of plastic o-ring around the lifter but my new ones didn't. Are they suppoed to? If so where do I get them? Thanks Des.

The parts you're referring to are the HLA retainers. They were used to initially hold the HLAs in place. With the engine heat, they become brittle. If you've got extra shims, because of a reground cam, don't use them again. Use masking tape to hold the HLAs in place until the rocker assembly is on the head. From reading all the posts on here, it seems they're not essential. Did you put the shims in facing the right way (i.e. 3 dimples down) ?
I bought a set of retainers from Bursons a year or two ago for about $21. I've got the same problem with my engine (which was quiet until I removed the rocker assembly when I replaced the head gasket).

I don't think the retainer can cause lifter tick on start-up. I have the same problem (about one start in three) and always understood it was caused by the oil "leaking down" or draining from one or more lifters when the oil pressure drops to zero after the engine is shut off. I'm told it's nothing to be concerned about, as it has no effect on performance, wear, etc - but it IS an annoyance. I don't know what can be done about it, as lifters must have (small) openings to allow the oil to flow through and fill the lifter to take up the clearances. Having said that, most cars - even most Falcons - don't have the problem, so why some and not others?
Sorry I can't help any more than that. I would like to hear a solution as well.

Yeah I know. More so frustrating when you have spent hours and money on the motor and end up with the same thing. I am dreaming a rebuild

I have been running 20W-50 Amsoil synthetic, and have recently switched to 20W-50 Royal Purple synthetic. Even with reasonably thick, top-of-the-line synthetic oil, it still clatters like a diesel for about 3 seconds on cold starts (but only about every third start!?). I figure it probably can't be fixed with oil. And that was with all new lifters.
Maybe a 5W-30 would fill the lifters faster, so they wouldn't tick. But I don't think the thinner oils are recommended for the Ford six. Anyone tried it?

I run Magnatec 10-40W without issues...Could the hole on the top of the rocker arm be slightly blocked/smaller not allowing oil to go through?

I've been wondering if HLA ticking happens more when using 2 shims & a reground cam. If they're ticking it means the oil hasn't worked it's way into the centre of the HLA. I wonder what would happen if the second shim (closest to the HLA) had a slot cut through it to the centre to allow oil to get in easily. @Smokey....Retired Did you bleed the lifters before installing them?

I'm having the same issue with mine after replacing my lifters.
post1181581.html mine goes away after a few minutes, its only noticeable after sitting for a while (few days) though. I also wonder if its a clogged oil hole or something like that, I wonder if there is a simple way of finding out, or if an oil flush would suffice. I was thinking I should clean out all the oil passages etc while I had it all open ;-> I wonder about making some new shims with a hole through them and a bit of a seal onto the lifter body with a cup on top so the lifter always has a reservoir of oil ready to go. Hah part of me wants to put some polycarb windows into the rocker cover so I can see whats going on. (although with all the oil spraying around in there i wonder if you could see anything. |

Yeah have same problem with my 96 ef,on start up a first but then it started to take longer to quieten with more stopping and starting, driving.Went to me parts man, told use 500mls of moreys heavyduty oil stabilizer.Give the engine new motorcraft filter half full of moreys and 10-40 magnetic castrol and filled the sump with the rest of the 500mls of moreys and top it up with the rest of oil needed.Started engine few clacks, then good as gold,no more clacking.Yeah.Any thoughts on this product!well come.

Short Shift,
I left the new lifters sit in a tub of new oil for over a week. Over a month has passed now and the car still ticks a bit on start up which is frustrating but atleast goes away after a few seconds. I was thinking what if the oil pump is a bit warm and doesn't pump enough oil pressure quickly enough on initial startup?

If it goes away after a few seconds I wouldn't worry about it.
Its just the oil pressure bleeding down in them, what oil are you using? |
