So I've just finished upgrading the base components of my car (extractors, cat, exhaust, intake, snorkel, timing, air filter.) Just wondering what the next move should be for more power. Anyone who has upgraded an EF/EL from stock would be cool to hear from. I'd like to put in a J3, but would rather do it near the end to glue everything together with a good dyno tune.

next would be cam, diff gears and a t5. j3 at the same time as the cam.

Any particular cam you'd recommend? I'm after low-mid torque, but I know nothing about cams, especially the general costs involved.

Yeah it's an auto. Would you also be able to explain regrinding to me? I know a bit about most other bits on my car, but yeah, I'm 100% clueless when it comes to cams and associated terms.

a regrind is when they modify a standard cam to change the lobe profile, with regrinds you have to run an extra shim under the lifter to make up for the amount they grind off the base circle.
with a billet cam you dont need extra shims as its ground from a brand new blank cam

Ah cool, cheers man. I'm thinking about dropping in an AU XR6 engine anyway, but it doesn't sound anywhere near as expensive to modify the cam as I thought. Not sure how much it is to buy an engine and drop it in, but I've heard people say around the $1,600 mark for the engine and labour costs if it's fitted by a mechanic. My current engine is blowing smoke at high rpms and is leaking a bit of oil from the rear seal. It's also a stock Falcon 4.0l, so not sure it's worth keeping in.

not sure on the cost to drop in an au engine, but it isnt a straight forward swap. either k frame has to be modded (engineers cert) or the sump has to be cut and shut.

Ah okay. Might drop in an EL XR engine then.

I was gonna say new dizzy cap and rotor, better coil, good leads and plugs. That would pretty much nail the external bolt ons.

Then a Manual conversion and a diff swap.

Then start cracking open the engine.. Tickford head with some porting work, vernier gear (if needed) to dial the cam you get and a chip to tune.

Then a bottom end freshen up, re bearing and double check sizes, with some decent pistons.

Standard bottom end handles 300hp well so I wouldn't be too fussed on balancing, rods etc. unless you have and want to spend the $$$.

Then cruise around in that (unless your pouring white smoke and your rings really are poop) while you full rebuild a strong engine to strap a supercharger to ;-)..

Don't know how mentioning that it blows smoke at rpm got translated to shot rings, but these engines are tough as chuck Norris. Keep in mind, ea-el, Tickford or stock the bottom ends are all essentially the same.

My plan is to gather old engines and store them.. So, although it hasnt happened yet, if I flog one out get a bottom end knock or break whatever I can swap blocks over a weekend and keep going.

No worries.

Nice looking car there. You should make a build thread, put up some more pics!
