Is there a heap of heat being generated and is it using a heap of fuel?
Mine was absolutely gutless, was using ridiculous amounts of fuel and had a fair bit of heat happening. Ends up the timing had been retarded (god knows why) and the throttle position sensor had been played with. After those 2 things adjusted back to standard, the car is 100 times better than what it was. |

Big car + long first gear in auto = frustration.
Although it could be one of many things as posted by someone eg filter, plugs, leads, coil. Could even be leaking intake manifold gasket. |

I dare say that would be your first problem there. The hybrids seem to have a lack of torque off the line compared to the older engines. Obviously has to do with the head design. But generally, once you hit the 3000ish rpm mark, they tend to take off like no normal EL motor. Quick and smooth all the way to the rev line. And because of their lack of torque downlow, they wont spin the wheels easily, and will tend to use a bit more fuel. |

all very odd!!!
anyhoo... the wagon is long wheelbase and at least as heavy as a lane and goes great including tyre smoke??? so what is going on? suspect the ecu needs to be decoded to see what's going on.... |

If its a hybrid motor, its not odd.
I had one for a few years before I did mods, and the old man currently has one, in a 98 NL. Whereas mums 97 NL is a class above it for round town driving, low down power and city fuel economy. But mums Fairlane can't match dads in freeway economy. The hybrids rule that one. If you shut your eyes and drove each car back to back, you'd swear they were a different car. |

But the timing is advanced what happened with your throttle position sensor?? i can try another one..

Also,
The car the motor came out of was a manual EL, that had HEAPS of go, and now its just gutless, even the owner of the EL could not believe how slow it is now .. He crashed his car, so maybe i can swap parts of his wreck, after changing the fuel filter, it made a big of difference, but still waking speed up to about 40kms, can the fuel pump get gumbed up with dirt??? or the injectors??? Also, I have a vacum gauge here, i can connected that and see what it reads... thanks for your help guts ... Sommer Gal.

okie, been playing around with it .
replaced map sensor, no difference replaced throttle position sensor no difference all the leads/coil/spark plugs/dizstruber are new the best way to exlpain it is that it feels like you have a huge delay when you start to move ... my friend said it could be the auto because he said its feels like its taking a while for it to "stall up" but did not quite understand what it means, is that like a lag??? im learning lots about the fords this way anyway, and this searching thought this site, but the difference is i took my dads 98 EL out for a drive and it just spins the wheels like crazy ... tried a different ECU too, Was reading in the gregorys book about fault code testing, but the book was not clear enough how to do it... can anyone help me there? Thanx guys . Sommer.

Just one thing to remember about the NL (as i have a concorde) You can only expect a 2 tonn car to go so fast from a standing start. Fairlanes are cruisers

And theres a world of difference between the manual and auto. I couldn't believe how much quicker a manual gets off the line compared to an auto, and his car was stock while mine was not.

correction.... slow off the mark! generally they pretty much keep up with sedans off the lights G.P.
Spin the wheels whenever you want to. To clarify? Does it take off slow then build up once you are going Sommer? Or is it generally sluggish? It does seem to be related to the auto? maybe try an xr6 auto ecu? |

Have you driven another auto 6 cyl to get a better idea of how the auto behaves?
