We have a EL that has just ticked over 100,000 km's and still has the original headgasket. Have been told that this is pretty good. The car always get's it coolent changed every 5000km's and the water pump bolts kept nice and tight. The car is still not showing any signs of leaks. How many km's does a normal headgasket usually last for will it need to be replaced soon?

so long as you look after it, which you obv are doing, it should last ages, it wont last for ever but u will increace its life dramatically, maby another 30,000 out of it at the least? im not to sure, but it will last a hell of a lot longer.

I don't think you can put a Km amount on it. My EA went around 130 and again about 180. The EL was suppose to have been done some time before I bought it. It had 135 on it when I got it. I had it redone last November at about 180

I personally don't think that that is anything special. My mom's EBII Fairmont is over 250,000km's never had the rocker cover removed, mines got 640odd and no issues. It's just bad luck or poor maintence that causes it.

1,030,000 odd k's was done in my EB with no head gasket change. Didn’t even blow out in the end, the car got written off..
So I don’t think you can put a K figure to a head gasket blowing. Treat the car right, let it warm up, and keep good coolant and it should be fine for quite a while.. |

You fools!
Now you've incurred the wrath of the head gasket gods! At least one of you will blow one soon now! I'm going to make an offering of coolant at my altar, and pray for you all. Having said that, this (my second head gasket) has lasted about 150,000 now, and somewhere along the line the thermostat got changed to a cooler one. Please, PLEASE don't blow...

My last fairlane i6 had 150k on it unopened like new still - im told its done bout 200 now with no issues as of yet.
I replaced alot of stuff like hoses and heater taps n stuff also new coolant was put in every 5-10k also. Radiator was clean as whistle n was the most reliable car i could ask for. Kind of wish i didnt have to sell it in the end.

Didnt someone say that fitting the metal AU gaskets will stop this so called problem?
My old EF GLi hadnt had a gasket change in over 250,000ks. Legend of a car. I want it back. |

Yes; when you DO change it; change it to the AU metal type gasket as these are known to last ages in comparison to the E-Series style.
