Hi, any suggestions please? EBII 4.0 EFI wouldn't start after short trip. Appears to have no spark at all even from coil lead when checked with timing light. Distributor and coil has done about 40,000km since replaced with new. Motor has about 410,000km. Motor been making groaning sound at front for about a year which I thought was power steering pump. Fuel pump has been checked. Cranks over fine but seems to be faster than usual, just wont fire, no coughs or splutters, nothing. Was otherwise running fine prior to this.

Check for play in the dizzy. Remove the dizzy cap and have someone crank the engine. See if the rotation is smooth.
Check your coil, it could have failed if you are getting nothing from the coil lead. |

Hey thanks for the quick response. Will check dizzy and coil. Have the old ones still.
So checked coil by switching back to old one, no luck. Checked volts at 2-pin connector on coil. 1 side is 12v. Checked between pins volts when cranking just drops by 3v and doesnt appear to pulse at all. So guess thats why no spark from coil. Check dizzy tomorrow. |

So the dizzy cap is off, no play in rotor button, tried twisting both directions but seems solid. Cranking motor (coil unplugged) the dizzy did a few rotations that appeared to be smooth in motion. I lined up the rotor button on the mark for no 1 firing (see pic, its lined up from above) and checked the crankshaft timing marks (other pic). A bit concerned that it appears to be out, like reading about 30 deg adv when should be 10 deg adv on the "IGN" mark. I know its not super accurate this way but can someone tell me whats the min deg it would be out if timing chain has jumped a tooth?

Took a few more pics with crank set to "IGN" and "TDC". Set at "IGN" the edge of the brass tip on the rotor lines up with the No.1 mark on dizzy. Set at "TDC" the edge is about 5mm past the mark. So timing chain?
